Im flying to ELS with SA in August via LHR. Does anyone have any info on what they are like as an airline in economy? The LHR-JNB flight is a 744 and then JNB-ELS on a 737. The only Star carriers I have flown are SQ and BD, are SA in anyway comparable to SQ?

Next Flights: EI DUB-LHR A320, BA LHR-SFO B744, UA SFO-LAS A320, BA LAS-LHR B744, EI LHR-DUB A320

I flew SA last month CDG-JNB and it was on a A340 and disappointingly did not have AVOD (apparently the A346s have AVOD)

The big deal on SA's 744s, apparently, is to pre-assign sets on the upper deck as it's all Y-class up there (one of the few airlines that don't put J or F on the upper deack) and the seat pitch is better than the main deck

The crew was good, the food was fine (especially liked the Ceres juice box service, being an organic food junkie) but the mainscreen entertainment was switched off after the first movie and did not come back on again until descent into JNB.

Even the flight map display was switched off  Sad

The a/c was not new, but was immaculately clean and the Y-class amenity pack was a nice surprise after so many longhaul sectors on US carriers where you get sweet f-a in eco!

Oh, and my mileage accrual wasn't credited automatically to my UA account - probably due to the difficulty the sub-contract check-in staff at CDG had trying to find the screen to enter my FF#

If you can get on the upper deck do it, the pitch is 3" more than main deck. Get a window seat if possible, the boxes below the windows make for more space, if you can get the front or exit rows even better.

My experience with SA has always been good, I fly them as much as possible (as my wife works for them Smile)

You will get an amenity pack like this: (the bag has changed but you still get socks, shades and toothbrush)

Service on board is drinks, then dinner, then duty free. All seats on the 744 have AVOD. Hot breakfast before you land.

The 738 is a nice ride too, and domestic service will include a hot meal or a snack depending on the flight time.

I flew CPT-JNB on a 342 yesterday and no, the ex LH planes do not have AVOD in economy although they do have the lie flat seats in business. 343 and 346 have AVOD throughout.

After Monday and Tuesday even the calendar says WTF...

Thanks for the replies, any idea's what they are like in Business? Is it worth the money?

Business class is probably one of the best in the sky. The lie flat seats were voted best by Skytrax 2 years running and the service is exemplary. Unfortunately the 744 doesn't have the true lie flats of the 340s but it is still pretty comfortable with plenty of space, 2-2-2 configuration.
