How is the service on this route operated by LAN Chile? Did anyone try flying only on this route, without going all the way to SCL?
It’s quite unusual that you can actually buy tickets only between MAD and FRA. And the price of a round trip ticket is less than 80 euros, on certain dates, even lower than a LCC price. On top of that, you get to fly on the A340-300.

It's definitely worth, LAN offers a full meal and a nice entertainment system with 6.4" PTVs, several video channels, interactive games, air show and music channels....all this on a long-haul plane for such a short route. It's the best choice, compared to IB, JK, or LH. Even some business passengers are aware of this and fly with LAN.

One negative of 5th freedom sectors like LA MAD-FRA at the end of longhaul routes is that delays may be more likely. And with their much lower frequency, if there should be a major delay (of cancellation) you are likely to have more problems being rebooked on another flight than if you were on IB or LH who have several flights a day and could probably rebook you on another flight a couple of hours later without too much inconvenience.

I hadn't try their service in that route...but I've flown a lot to MIA on their 767's and the service is amazing...here is my T.R with them, hope it helps!

Hey there,
flew them two times on this route (FRA-MAD-FRA, the first time also going on to SCL). For the price they offer it's definately the best product you can find on this route, given that they fly it with a long-haul a/c and PTVs in all classes. I took them in 2002 and 2005, and unfortunately you could also see a drop in service level there (all for Y Class) - this is what I can remember:
2002: Hot meal with entree choice, one drink round (with the meal), pillows and blankets, PTV with Avod at times crashing.
2005: Cold meal without choice (although still nicely presented and with real glasses for wine), one drink round with it, no pillows or blankets (maybe on request, did not ask), PTV with notably improved software.
F/As always were extremely nice and took time to serve each Y Pax individually, always asking for additional wishes and being slightly irritated when one passenger did not want to have some wine with the meal .
I would say it's not a big problem taking them when you're going for leisure. On the other hand, I never had a punctual departure from FRA with them (though these are snapshots only, don't know how their average punctuality in FRA is). Check-in also never went smooth (wrong seat assignments, worries about reservations etc.). The longhaul sector is the "risk potential" here, as Viscount already stated.
All in all they managed to impress me with their service as you can see in my nickname .
Otherwise - if you're thinking about trying them go for it! Mileage-wise, at least until 2005, they also were very generous, with even these cheap fares eligible for the full amount of miles and nice promotions for first-time purchases via their site (try to get that on IB!).

I just tryed it last 3th June from MAD to FRA.
I am an Airbus330-340 fan so i booked it just for fan,routing MXP-MAD in the morning with Easyjet,afternoon with then and then coming back the next day from CGN to MXP,and....people i very impress with service,very very good ,beginning from the check-in.Surerly i will do it another time always just for fan i think next september.
And at the end i just ask the Steward"can i shot the cockpit?" he ask the captain and he invite me inside and told"be like at home and take all the photos u want"so i was just how can u image at the top of my 2007 spotter's activity.

it is a very nice option for short haul, if you have the choice between lan and various lowcosts, go for lan, you'll have a nice empty a340 with alot of space, food+ptv service
