Choosing An Airline By Its Nationality

There was a thread on here a while back, where someone said that one of the factors they used in choosing an airline, was the nationality of the carrier. I am interested to know how widespread this view is, and which countries' airlines you will not fly with and why?

For example, are there some people who will not fly Air France because they are French, Bellview because they are Nigerian, Vietnam because they are Vietnamese, Aeroflot because they are Russian etc?


What do you mean you dont have any bourbon? Do you know how far it is to Houston? What kind of airline is this???

I'm Canadian and German and I fly both Air Canada and Lufthansa on a regular basis. To me, it's how the airlines attitude is toward the passenger that makes me want to fly them not the fact that the airline is my flag carrier.

What do you mean you dont have any bourbon? Do you know how far it is to Houston? What kind of airline is this???

Agreed, with the caveat that there are some airlines with poor safety records that I would not fly either.

I would not fly on an airline only if its nationality was in someway politically unstable or as mentioned before has a nasty safety record, but i dont think nationality plays a big role in that for me. Im an American and i avoid American Legacy carriers on on international service at all costs, not because of maintenance but because of principle and lack of service quality, even if theres a 200 dollar price difference, in their favor. I also prefer more "exotic" airlines than U.S. ones, gives a flight some flare for me. So nationality is a consideration for me sometimes but not usually.

Not to trail off topic, but i have flown both as well, and i just dont like the Attitude U.S. carriers in particular have towards economy class passengers, and the fact the U.S. legacies started the trend in destroying the once good levels of service in aviation to such low service standards worldwide. For me Non-U.S. carriers (not LCCs) are the only remnants of the way air travel used to be, (pre 9/11) comfortable and friendly. That and i just dont like big American business... Again just an opinion and an explanation why U.S. carriers are the only nationality i avid flying internationally.


P.S. Despite having only 18 yrs of age i HAVE had the fortunate experience of flying often

See personally, I would avoid any Sub-Saharan African carrier with the notable exception of SAA on any route based purely on the fact that I have serious reservations about safety and their safety culture. If i was flying regionally from Lagos to Abidjan or Lome or wherever, I'd have serious worries about it.

I'd avoid China Airlines as well on safety grounds, but have absolutely no problems in flying Korean for example.

Well not by nationality we as a family have chose never to fly on a LCC from Malaysia or India regardless of situation.

Just standard safety concerns with my parents

I am Swiss by hart and call Canada my beautiful home and I choose Canadian carriers first, Swiss, LH, KLM.... but my wife (Canadian) is considering her airline based on below

It wasn't really the legacy carriers, it was the fact that people like you won't pay for the services and low cost carriers like Southwest is why you don't see what used to be on planes. I flew NW in WBC and Y to and from FRA and JAN and it was fantastic, good meal, very nice and attentitive crew etc.


As for airlines, I wouldn't fly most small russian carriers or old block USSR carriers that operate the older TU's and such.

There are currently just 2 airlines that I will avoid any times: Korean and FlyNiki ( from Austria)

Although Korean is obviously much better than it used to be, I won´t fly them until they reach 20years of no crash.

FlyNiki is a nogo at all times. First I do not support Lauda and I know internal stories about their maintanance ( which has changed now but still) I flown with them once and trust me never ever again!

As with most decisions for me, nationality doesn't even come into the picture as a factor - I consider it irrelevant.

Safety is my primary factor, comfort is second, the price (together with flight timings) comes after that - and then it's a couple of personal preferences that come from previous flights that come into the picture.

I don't see why I should prefer an airline based on their nationality - or even because they've got the same nationality as I do... I've never lived in the country that I'm - legally - a citizen/national of, I don't feel any more, or less, connected to it than I do to the country that I've lived in practically all of my life, and I wouldn't hesitate giving up my current nationality for another one if that offered me even more freedom to travel.

For your information many LCCs offer better service AND lower prices than current legacies... legacies spew a lot of crap about not being able to "compete" with Lccs, when in fact they are in their positions because of mismanagement NOT LCCs..."boo ho we cant compete so were going to cut costs i.e. service, and keep our high fares" really good strategy...
But enough, i dont want to derail the original post...

By the ways the Tupolevs have good safety records, its a poor stereotype that the former USSR states dont care about maintenance... id fly a former USSR airline any day... I think flying by nationality eventually boils down for many people to personal choice.

However, i´d never fly on any israeli airline since even increased security for those flights can´t push aside my concerns regarding my personal security.

If a terrorist wants to pick an aircraft from the sky it is still possible...
...and i consider the potential thread as way too high for my personal life !
(from my personal point of view still much higher than that of any U.S. airline)

I generally wouldn't fly with a US airline (unless it was a US domestic service ) when I fly transatlantic I would fly with a European carrier simply because the service levels are greater.
