Hi all,

Which would you take? And why?

Choices between BA, Virgin and NZ (via LAX)

Ive flown BA's Y+ twice and enjoyed it but am leaning towards Virgin or NZ....

Any big plus' of flying these over BA?

Virgin definantly, they pioneered it, and seem the most interested to win premium Y passengers (therefore they will probably be the best). Also, you'd rather transfer through Hong Kong than through AKL and LAX.

However, I havn't flown any of these carriers in Y+ before.

NZ over VS or BA anyday. I've flown the Premium Economy product on all three between LAX and LHR, and NZ wins hands down.

no, 1 is seat comfort and room - more about sideways room then length but extra legroom is good - but I think theyre all at 38" ???

no. 2 is food

no. 3 is entertainment.

So would VS still be tops? I just don't wanna end up ont he upper deck or NZ in the 3-2 config on the LHS!

I'd still go with NZ. I wasn't impressed at all by the VS width of seat, so that leaves BA and NZ, and NZ have the better all round experience...good room width and length, good food, AVOD...still NZ.

So travel on the bottom deck in the 2-across configuration. As TG992 said the other day, the bottom deck is very popular for the bizjet feel.. NZ U class is 39-40" on board the 744 I believe. My feeling is that the NZ AVOD is very good compared to many carriers. I have only ever sat upstairs in U class, and I really enjoyed the experience.

The issue for you is more do you want to transit AKL and travel transtasman on NZ or take direct out of Oz?

Either is fine, if it was a problem I would have listed a criteria so it doesn't matter for me. Don't mind the extra few hours spent trans tasman or at Auckland airport.

Sorry but you are wrong - BA pioneered World Traveller Plus before Virgin copied them and rolled out Premium Economy in February 2000. At that time BA was already operating World Traveller Plus on flights to Australia - Virgin Atlantic's first flight to SYD did not even take off until 7 December 2004. By this time BA World Traveller Plus had been operating for nearly four years, and airlines like United, All Nippon and SAS all had a separate enhanced economy cabin on the majority of their long-haul flights.

It is debatable whether or not Premium Economy/World Traveller Plus etc were themselves innovative, as in the 1980s some airlines did offer a separate economy cabin for those passengers who had paid the full fare. One such airline was British Caledonian, who not only offered a separate cabin with wider seats offering more legroom, but also a superior service and use of dedicated executive lounge at LGW, their main hub.

Hmm, Im going to have to disagree with you again BCAL,
VS did roll out a Premium Economy service before BA, however it was not called premium economy. This was rolled out in 1992, as mid class you can read all about it here http://www.virgin-atlantic.com/tridi...economy_fact_sheet_tcm4-426060.pdf

Oh and since when did length of running a route really prove anything.

Thanks for the link to mid class but my recollection is that BOAC even had a class, situated between First and Economy, on their 707s and VC10s that was generally reserved for frequent flyers and business passengers paying the full fare. You are correct in that BA were the first to offer the Premium service on the LHR-SYD route. If Virgin introduced Premium when they started the SYD route, you would also be right, but they didn't, VS offered Premium way before flying to SYD, so your statement doesn't really prove anything.

I would choose the flight on frequent flier allegiance.. I would probably go with BA. NZ is too long to go the wrong way.
