First Class On Long-haul Worth It?

I frequently travel on long haul flights (8+ hours) and I've always had the debate on whether I should fly business/first or economy. My parents like to save (their) money so I usually fly economy, but when its 11 am and I'm stuck on a 15 hour flight with a cramped seat and my legs aching, I do wish that I was up there with the nice seats.

I wanted to see what other people think: Would/do you just bear with it for the next 16 hours or do you give in and try to get yourself an upgrade?

I no longer fly Economy Class for more than 4-5 hours.
I barely have half an inch between my knees and the seat in front of me when the seat is in the "upright" position, so imagine how it is for me once that seat goes into the "reclined" position.
For a while I made upgrades for miles from Economy to Business Class on transatlantic westbound flights, returning to Europe in Economy on the shortest routes possible.

Meanwhile I changed policies in such a away that I fly Business Class in both directions, either paid for (discounted with 4-8 weeks advance purchse) or get a Business Class ticket for miles.

I also have considered to use one of the likes of Maxjet or Oasis Hongkong, but this has come to no fruitition yet. Surely their fares can be folund much lower than those of legacy carriers, but then I have to problem to get to STN or even worse from HAJ to LGW (no service).

My family usually tries to fly first class domestically and business class internationally. We fly the AKL-LAX route a lot with QF and its just makes the trip so much easier in business class.

For the most part when flying first/business class we purchase miles with AS and fly their partners internationally, but sometimes its hard to find award seats so we end up buying the tickets. but it is a hell of a lot cheaper to buy the miles if there is space!

If you have the money to fly Business class then it is well worth it... there is SUCH a big difference between coach and business class, but not as big of a difference between F and J. So I would say if you are willing to fork over a few extra dollars that J is well worth it and unless you have enough money to fly F without going broke theres no need to spend THAT much.

Check out AS's bulk mileage purchase program and then look at how much it is to fly on one of their partners where ever you are going and give AS a call at 1800.307.6912 (partner desk) to see if there is space!!

would be intresting to know, if you still fly business or first class if you had to spend your own hard earned money...

well I would love to fly business... but well my money is just enough to fly eco...

I make it a policy to only travel in Y if the flight is no more than 4 hours. Beyond 4 hours it has to be in at least business class or I'm not travelling

I buy J tickets with my own money or use my contacts to get a FF award for J class tickets

IF nonrevving same policy applies. No Y class for me for flights over 4 hours.

Of course there are times when non revving that the situ changes and there is absolutely nothing that I can do about it. But as long as I have some choice ...

The morning flights are just painful... I'm seriously considering that policy of no Economy if its over say 5 hours or something.

The most important for me is the seat, so my approach is the following:

I fly J on long haul where I'll get at least a lie-flat seat (160º-170º recline) and sometimes even a full-flat (BA/VS).

I don't fly on airlines that still offer the old standard reclined seats on long haul J (most of the americans - AA/DL/US/UA). Doesn't make sense when I can get lie-flats for the same money (IB/BA/CX).

I fly Y on short haul in Europe since I don't want to pay at least 500 EUR more for J just to get a meal. Sometimes that's the only difference between J and Y on european flights (IB) and even if get a little better seat pitch (BA/LH) it doesn't pay off for me.

I think F is for the people who doesn't even look at the price, once you start looking at F rates and wondering about spending that kind of money you should go J........it's just my opinion, some will agree and some won't.

My statement in reply #1 indeed reflects this.
With flying less longhaul flights and an increase in money available (and an increase in body weight  Sad ), I now put more focus shelling out the money for flying longhaul in Business Class while at the same time I try to keep other expenses down (no glitzy hotels, no expensive dinners *), etc.).

This balancing of my funds is based on own experience, where I found out that a 10-hour flight in Economy after a vacation is easily able to ruin all the positive experiences and positive mood I had accumulated during the stay. That way the expenses of the complete vacation were spent in vain. Like I said I now put more focus on flying in comfort (rather than flying in style).

*) Actually, by cutting back on food during vacations usually helps me to loose some weigth.

Well, you can have that all in J or F too and I suppose than you will be really pissed!


Personally, I do not care about Y,J or F. If I want to go somewhere I look what is available. I have to admit that I travel on staff tickets all the time so when I see a J-Class full I get myself a Economy ticket simply because if I get downgraded I won´t get the fare difference.

For me flying is the thing; not the seat, not the PTV or AVOD etc etc. Give me a window and I do not need anything more.  Smile But it is to everybody what to choose. If I could afford buying F-Class tickets without thinking about the money I would propably do it, but I do not have it.  Smile

well, say i was flying emirates from dubai to newyork traveling with three other people, if i had to choose i would take a nice sweet on the 10 day cruise for less than a suite on a 13 hour flight, so i say no. although if you can get upgraded always take that!  Wink

Now that I live in the Middle East and fly routes like DXB-RUH, DXB-JED, DXB-ISB, DXB-DAC and others routes for which labour traffic constitutes a large portion of the travel, I appreciate economy class flights on airlines like BA or VS much more. Why? Because of my experiences traveling on routes such as the above, where my fellow passengers, most of which have usually not had a shower in a while, will not know how to do any of the following:

Check-in
Pack luggage
Go through security
Board
Find their seat
Sit in their seat
Use the seatbelt
Stow luggage
Use a fork and knife
Disembark

Trust me this makes it very frustrating to travel with them. If anyone wishes to challenge me please take EK 818 from Riyadh to Dubai on a Wednesday night and you'll see what I mean.

Tongue-in-cheek...but I'd almost rather sit in Business Class for 1.5 hr hop over to Riyadh from Dubai and fly 16 hours in e.g. Qantas Economy than sit in Economy on the EK flight to Riyadh and travel in Business for 16 hours.

Of course that doesn't stop me from whining before my next economy class flight to Los Angeles from Dubai!
