How Much Is Enough Time To Connect At ATL?

So i'll be going to NYC for one week next month, but i thought instead of just staying in the very expensive NYC hotels for the whole week i'd take a 3 day trip to Miami as well, and maximize my US experience (so to speak).


I'd most likely be flying Delta and as i've noticed that the lion share of their NYC-MIA flights require connecting in ATL, i'm just curious as to approx how much time i'd need for successfully connecting there (and god forbid not miss my flight back home from JFK later the same day).

Does it make any difference that i'm a foreign citizen when i connect onto domestic flights inside the US? In broad terms how much time would you recommend to have when connecting at such a busy airport as ATL?


I spotted some flights with about 2 hours layover, for reference.

Thankful for any input!

Once you're in the USA you shouldn't have any problems connecting to/onto a domestic flight, as long as you've already cleared FIS and Customs.


In terms of connecting at ATL? It's an easy airport to navigate (probably the easiest major hub) and I've made it from T1 to E30 in 16 minutes for example, but flying into/out of NYC can mean major delays. I would opt for more time to be on the safe side.

More than enough.
To be on the safe side (for you and your luggage), something like 50 minutes should be the minimum connection (which will give you some buffer for inbound delays)..

Unless it is considerably more expensive, why not try LGA-MIA-ATL-JFK ?
That way you do not risk missing your connection when flying out of NYC; on the return even if your flight from ATL to JFK gets delayed this will not hurt your travel plans too much (just do not book the last flight in the evening).

No.
I only had a "problem" once when I used my german drivers license, which does not have any Expiration Date, for check-in with AA at SNA (after the kiosk couldn't process my reservation). The PSA was not too happy and that did not change even after having presented her with my passport. I ended up with "SSSS" on by boarding pass, but this meant no real delay.

Yep, you should have no problem in ATL. The problem resides in NYC, especially with JFK. When you go down to Miami, try not to fly out of JFK in the evening as that place is an absolute mess with all the flights to Europe departing in addition to numerous RJ flights; a 2 hour takeoff que isn't exactly uncommon at around 6 or 7 PM. As HT said, flying out of LGA on the way down there would be a better option but you should still avoid flying out in the evening as LaGuardia gets quite busy during that time as well. LGA in the morning isn't always pleasant either. I don't know when you'd prefer to fly out of NYC, but in terms of a hassle-free traveling experience departing in the afternoon would be your best bet. Don't worry about coming back into JFK, you should be fine as you'll be connecting in relatively hassle-free ATL (unless there are numerous t-storms in the area), an hour there should be adequate. But when you fly out of JFK back to Europe, expect a long wait in the takeoff que since you'll most like depart in the evening.

Considering non-stop flights there are various options that i just now looked up.

Beginning with:

DL1862 JFK-FLL and back on DL654, arriving before noon at JFK (which would save me any worries about missing my outbound JFK flight which leaves at 5:20pm). This seems like a fairly sensible option to me, only question in my mind is how well suited FLL is when my final destination is Miami. What do you guys have to say about it? I know that FLL isn't all that far from Miami itself, and i read that there is something called the Tri-rail that serve both FLL and MIA to Miami.



The thing is that i would like to connect at ATL just for the sake of it, just to have spent some time at that airport (world's busiest as it is). But perhaps it would be better to take that connection on the Miami bound flight instead of tempting fate and risk delays, missed flights etc when i have that homebound flight out of JFK to get in proper time to. There are some options for connecting when i am going to Miami (FLL in this particular case), one that would land me on a 777 and a 757, neither of which that i have previously flown on. It would cost me about $75 more in airfare..but what the heck, you got to live right?  Wink


Anyways, i'm just brainstorming here, any suggestions that you guys might have are very welcome!

Doyou intend to return to NYC on the very day of your continuation to Europe ? In that case, a nonstop flight into JFK would be first choice.
However, in case you intend to stay a last night in NYC, there is no need for you to arrive absolutely on time.

In the first case, take a connection via ATL enroute NYC to MIA/FLL. Try to depart at a less busy time from NYC.
In the latter case, head to MIA/FLL nonstop and connect at ATL on your return.

Yep, Tri-Rail services all 3 South Florida airport (MIA, FLL, PBI) and connects to Metrorail at the Tri-Rail/Metrorail Transfer Station in Miami. Tri-Rail is 72 miles long from Miami International Airport to Mangonia Park, which is just north of Palm Beach International Airport. It serves all the major areas in between these endpoints including Miami itself, Fort Lauderdale, Boca Raton, Lake Worth, and West Palm Beach (as well as quite a few other points as there are 18 stations). Metrorail is the rapid transit system for just Miami and Dade County (22 miles long, 22 stations), but doesn't serve Miami International Airport. It does serve downtown of course as well as surrounding areas in Dade County such as Coral Gables, Palmetto, and South Miami. And there's Metromover, which is like a monorail that mainly serves downtown. So FLL may actually be easier for access in Miami as you just get on Tri-Rail and can then transfer on to Metrorail for downtown Miami. However Metrorail doesn't serve Miami Beach. Of course you can always get a cab or take Metrobus as well if you want to go to the beach or prefer MIA. Here are links to their webpages where you can view routemaps:

Ditto from me too. Without a doubt one of the best laid out airports I've ever flown through.

I see you are a Delta employee, but I've NEVER taken that long between connecting flights in ATL. Pick the two gates that are the farthest apart, and it's no more than 15 minutes.

I flew through Atlanta in June with a one hour connection time both ways, and I was fine.

And thanks for those public transportation links 747fan, i surely found out everything that i need to know about getting around Miami as well as to and from the area airports.


Right now it looks like i will be flying down to Miami with DL1275 EWR-ATL (B738) and then DL511 ATL-MIA (B752), with somewhat more than 2hrs to connect. Then i would take DL654 from FLL nonstop to JFK arriving hopefully well ahead of my homebound flight later in the afternoon. This particular itiniary sets me back $215 right now, i found it to be a good compromise between cost and all around airplane geek pleasure!  Wink

Legal minimum in ATL is either 35 or 40 minutes. Either is more than enough time; can make it from T1 to the farthest E gate in under 20 minutes, and that's including going to the bathroom and possibly grabbing a quick bite to bring with me on the plane. ATL is set up real well for connections; one of the most connection-friendly airports in the country in my opinion.
