I want to start taking flying lessons, with the aim of obtaining my PPL sometime next year. The one piece of advice so far seems to be to do it in as short a period as possible, to make it more affordable. Could anyone recommend a flight school around MYF or Gillespie Field in San Diego?

I'm not sure how necessary going to one of the schools is to you, but try Gibbs (an FBO) at MYF. They have a couple flying clubs, including my favorite, Plus One, with many, many instructors who are very knowledgable and friendly. I can give you the number of my former CFI out there and she can either teach you herself, or will hook you up with another instructor.
One more thing, the biggest thing that will change your cost is how much you need to fly...be focused on quality as well, don't go after the quickest way to the license without considering the quality of both the aircraft and instructors, and their availability, etc.
