Is LH Really That Bad?

Now to start off, I have flown LH many times in Europe but never over the pond. I have always found there product to be alright, never had a problem. I have heard just horror stories from a lot of people on A.NET about thier long-haul services and later on in the year I will be doing the following routing:

LH 969
Depart: MUC 10:30 AM
Arrive: FRA 11:40 AM
A300

Connecting to

LH 418
Depart: FRA 01:00 PM
Arrive: IAD 03:45 PM
747-400

Connecting to

UA 953
Depart: IAD 05:00 PM
Arrive: PHX 07:55 PM
A320

After reviewing all of my options I might think about changing my itinerary. I am not looking forward to my connection in FRA & IAD, I think I may be cutting it close at IAD, 1 h 15 min to clear customs only. Having never connected in FRA what can I expect? Please tell me it wont be anything like LHR..... Depending, I may call and change to the AC flight out of MUC connecting in YYZ onto PHX I believe, with a 6 hour layover, also not very fun. Or maybe the non-stop MUC-DEN flight then to PHX. Or even MUC-SFO/LAX. Please share your expirences. What adivce can you give? Thanks in advance!

IMHO, No LH is not that bad. I have flown them to MEX and GRU and I have to say that they are good. Personally I prefer AF over them but they are by no way bad.

People tend to not like them because of the lack of PTV but that is no reason for me to avoid them. Considering that they made a billion dollar profit you made a good choice.  Smile

I've flown economy with LH as follow :

CDG-FRA-LAX & SFO-MUC-CDG. All I have to say is that the service was not bad at all, the F/A are in fact really friendly as soon as you speak few words in german when you ask something.

In fact, I'd say that LH is better on long haul than on intra-european flights.

Regarding the connection at FRA on the way to IAD, I'd try to have a little longer one.
FRA can be a nightmare walking wise between two flights and if you flightfrom MUC is on late, you may have to run!!!!

Flying is amazing!

A connecting time of 1h20min at FRA would not be a problem.
Depending on the actual departure gate you might have to use the tunnel between Piers A and B, but still you will stay airside. Of course expect a second security check.
If your flight to IAD should depart form "A", things are even better.

I would be a bit worried about the one at IAD, too. Plus the long flight IAD to PHX ...
The same comments would be for a connection via ORD.

This would have been my first choice to fly from MUC to PHX, but allow about 2 hours for the connection at DEN.
Good timings for the longhaul flight; no unnecessary transfers. Might take a moment to get through immigration and wait for the luggage, then re-clear security hence the "2 hour" recommendation based on own experience.
Finally a short 2-hour hop to PHX.
Overall, this should be the quickest and most convenient travel.

Quoting SiouxATC (Thread starter):
Or even MUC-SFO/LAX.

If you want to max out on miles accrual and the price is alright (and so are the timings), the detour via SFO or LAX might be a thing to consider. But if you want to fly home quick, go for the connection via DEN.

Service is best described as "basic but reliable".
I can live without personal IFE.
Seating is cramped as with almost any other carrier - at least too cramped for my body in Y, but that is my personal problem.

I forgot to mention that I usually use them when flying all over Europe. These 2 were my only longhauls on them.  Smile

I've flown LH from FRA to LAX and it was really a good service. For further informations read my Trip Report:
Lufthansa FRA - LAX - FRA + ORD / Pics (by StefanPAD Feb 26 2006 in Trip Reports)

Last year I checked AF on the route HAJ - CDG - JFK and back. Service was too robotic, but ok for it's price.

This year I'll do my JFK-trip on LH. I'm looking really forward to it.

I guess "basic but reliable" covers it quite well - they're usually somewhat on-time, the service is usually efficient but only sometimes truly friendly (though very rarely truly unfriendly). The seats are, in my opinion, amongst the best - but the pitch is awfully smal, which ruins any comfort gains that the seats could offer.

As for connecting in FRA - I still don't understand why so many make such a big fuss about it, because it really is quite easy. The distances can sometimes be a bit long, but since there are moving walkways throughout the concourses, it's usually not much of a problem.

The airport is really rather easy to get through.

I've flown LH several times: ORD-FRA-DEL and DFW-FRA-DEL. I've never had a bad experience with them. I also enjoy going though FRA.

Re: your 1 hr 15 min connection time in IAD

If possible, I would go one flight later. I went through IAD's US customs in 2004, and while I wouldn't say it was extremely slow, it wasn't quick either. But the line going back to the departure area through the security x-ray machines were long and slow, even at 8AM on a weekend. Then, you have to catch a bus to go to the terminal building where your connecting flight is (because IAD has lots of terminal buildings). All in all, lots of waiting time, and it could make you very nervous if you get held up anywhere along the process.

Depart MUC 11:15 am
Arrive IAD 2:46 pm
777-200

connecting to

United 953
Depart IAD 5:00 pm
Arrive PHX 7:55 pm
A320

AIRLINERS.NET CREW
HEAD MODERATOR

hi guys,

I was trying to take a non rev standby flight on one of the LH flights to the US a few weeks ago and I regularly check for the loads on LH flights. Well, the flights are full! Very hard to get on as standby when you non rev!
And why is that so? Because LH is so bad?  scratchchin  because there is no PTV  scratchchin
People fly with LH all over the world and of course sometimes the service sucks (like at every other airline) but maybe people look at other things than just having PTV or the best IFE system.... Maybe reliability or being on time (mostly) is more important...
Most a.netters care more about PTV, so LH sucks in their opinion...

Thats leaving a bit early, however I am staying at the Keminski Hotel Munich Airport I would like to sleep in a little bit tho! Generally I would rather connect at IAD than ORD.

WILCO737, I totally agree with you. In my opinion a PTV does not matter to me. As long as I have a book and my iPod, I have everything I need for a long-haul flight! But I have noticed that a.netters seem to complain about the lack of PTVs. But to each his own, If PTVs make or break thier flights so be it.

LH isn't that bad, but the lack of IFE sometimes is drawn into having bad service.
