Top 5 Spotting Sites Before You Die?

Hello all.

After a little search, found one similar topic but was wondering if I could alter it somewhat.

If you were given the choice of spotting aircraft at 5 of the best sites before you died, what would they be? I would love to see what sort of response I would get from people, old and new, to see their opinions. I mean, I have not travelled to many ultimate sites, but I am still young (enough) to save up for a little luxury before I make my final boarding call.

1. St Maarten (Obvious reasons)
2. St Bart (ditto)
3. RAF Loops - Wales (High speed passes)
4. Innsbruck (Mother nature as a backdrop)
5. London - Heathrow (such variety)

Well, they are not perfect, but they would be the ones I would Choose. You?

Great topic!!!!

1. Kai Tak RIP
2. NRT
3. ANC
4. JNB
5. JED

Wildcard: LUA (Lukla, Nepal)

I realized I've spotted at some of the top airports in the world: JFK, LHR, MIA, HKG, KIX and LAX (I literally live 1 mi from LAX)

I feel like SXM is really played out and I haven't even been there!

1 - THR Tehran, Iran - such variety of old machines.
2 - SXM St Maarten, Dutch Antilles - just for the hell of it.
3 - MPH Caticlan, Philippines - like the above, only even lower approaches, with a great variety of rare props.
4 - LYR Longyearbyen, Norway (Svalbard) - Can't beat watching an aircraft land at 1am, in clear sunlight, even if it is a 737!
5 - LED St Petersburg, Russia - lots of wonderful Russian beasts (close tie with Vladivostok for variety)

I've done 3 and 4 so far, hopefully will get around to 1 later this year!

damn you, I wanna live near those apartments on Westchester Parkway

LAX is on the top of my list

I wanna spot at Places where I see a lot of activity, not only the unique aspect of airports such as SXM or St. Barthem's..

Heathrow, LAX (ive done it), Frankfurt, Hong Kong, Congonhas, SDU.

I cant contain myself, so here are a few more that are well within my reach... SAN, SFO, MEX.

and some that are not too likely.. SXM, AMS, MAD, BOM.

My list is endless, because I wanna spot at all major airports, interesting things to see and the activity will probably never bore me, however Ive been bored spotting at LAX at times when traffic was down.

Yes sir, one of the cool places where General Aviation traffic and Airliner Traffic are in "close contact". I have still been delaying myself this chance to go there, will be there next week with Md11fan hopefully.

I agree with LAXspotter that I would also like variety and frequency as well as unique destinations. I have included KJFK for that reason alone. But it may not have been my best choice. Love the idea PLMspotter brought up with Tehran and some of the older classics. You could also put a number of African spots in this catergory, then.

I must admit I cancelled a holiday to Hong Kong when Kai Tak was to close and my travel dates (appointments) did not align prior to the event.

Any more frequency vs scenery options? I tried to mix mine between military, commercial and plain old views.

Anyone else want a go?

Close but no cigar. JFK and MIA. I wanted to put MIA on the list but what I think is the great thing about MIA is that OPF is near by and at OPF you can see some great aircraft but that would be two airports.

5. London Heathrow...

SNA has a curfew from 10PM-7AM (most days, I think it may go till 8AM on weekends). So at 7AM, there will be a constant stream of departures.

I stayed a a hotel right off the departure end of the 19's a few years back and meant to go out in the morning to watch, but I slept in.

I have already started saving up for a trip to St Maarten. That is my dream trip and I have to do it within a couple of years. I need a vacation anyway, and what would make it any better than laying on the beach and watching those beautiful planes fly over me. I was there once when I was 18 and wish I would have gone to that beach to plane spot but I was there as a stop off from a cruise and didn't think about it at the time.

In no particular order.

SXM - would be awesome to combine a beach holiday with some spotting.
FRA - massive variety of aircraft/airlines, maybe more so than LHR.
ORD - huge airport with aircraft movements 24/7.
HKG - unique airlines not seen in my neck of woods.
SYD - has a lot of variety and activity, some rare airlines to see.

Here's my top five:
SXM: nothing like standing about 60 ft. below an arriving 747! (or a couple-hundred feet behind a departing 747, clinging onto the fence as over 200,000 lb. of thrust get blasted out of the engines)
LAX: massive airport, great variety, lots of 747's, great weather.
LHR: see LAX, minus the good weather, plus even more 747's.
JFK: great variety from airlines all across the world (especially Europe, some of the airlines quite exotic such as Aerosvit).
ORD: see LHR, minus some 747's, plus lots of RJ's and a near seamless stream of arrivals and departures.

ATL doesn't make my top five, but is a close #6. Its extremely busy like ORD and has lots of (Delta) widebodies, especially (Delta) 767's, but lacks variety as its overwhelmingly Delta, quite a bit of AirTran, and then everyone else (all the legacies plus a few int'l carriers).
