DL Or F9 On ABQ-SLC?

I'm planning a Labor Day trip to see some friends up in SLC. I have two options:

1.) (The most logical option) DL (Skywest) non-stop from ABQ-SLC. It's $263 and 1.5 hours flying each way. (CRJ-200)

2.) (The fun option) F9/Republic ABQ-DEN-SLC. It's $316 and about 3.25 hours flying each way. (ERJ-170/A319)

The debate: DL or F9?

In favor of DL:
a. It's much shorter
b. It's cheaper

Against DL:
a. It's a crappy CRJ-200 that kills my knees (I'm 6'4")
b. I hate the E Concourse in SLC
c. I've flown this route 100 times and it's getting kind of boring

In favor of F9:
a. It's a cool new a/c type (EMB-170) that I haven't flown
b. F9's service is much better
c. Flights are more comfortable

Against F9:
a. It's more expensive
b. It's about double the flying time and involves a connection in DEN.

SO... what would you do? I'm leaning slightly towards Frontier, but I'm not 100% decided.

No offense but why would you waste your time flying through DEN on a more expensive flight then fly nonstop on a cheaper one. I mean it really isn't a long trip so why make it long?

I would have chosen Delta Connection. Just my opinion thought...

I'm not sure why you'd waste your time and money when you could be spending both at your destination had you flown Delta. You must have a lot of free time!

Since this seems to be purely a mini-vacation to visit friends and not a business trip, I don't see how it's a waste of time at all to fly Frontier instead of Delta. When I'm taking a vacation, the trip there and back is as much as part of the vacation to me as what I do once I get to my destination! I have also taken the least convenient routing in order to fly new airlines and to/through new airports (and to avoid the CRJ-200), and don't regret it one bit. It's not really a waste of money either since he's paying for an extra flight on a more comfortable aircraft...

If time and money aren't concerns, F9 was the better choice. Just about anything is better than a CRJ-200.

Good call on F9  thumbsup

Even though it costs more, I'm sure it's worth it!

Exactly. You could have contact me and I could have gotten you an exit row seat so your legs weren't all cramped....

That said, if DEN has thunderstorms in the afternoon, forget about getting to SLC on the night of your trip--you'll misconnect and have to pay for a hotel in DEN on your own dime....or, if the F9 cuties are nice, you'll get INVOL rerouted on DL anyway.....

Stop by and say hi at the DL counter before you leave.

Cheers.

I was done there a few weeks ago trying to redeem a DL Skymiles Certificate. You weren't by chance the guy that helped me out for 2.5 hours trying to get everything sorted with the damn Indian call center?

If so, I need to buy you a few drinks. Lol.

^ This is similar to my vacation philosophy as well...though I dont plan my trips based on flying new airlines/types, once i have mapped out where I am going to go, then I see if I can have some fun with the whole "getting there" process, long as its affordable and not too much more than what a more rational routing to wherever my destination(s) may be...

That being said...good choice with F9 there Steve!...report back on the EMB-170 for us!! Haven't been on the Republic/F9 -170 yet...

Nope, wasn't me. I've been doing lots of work at the gates and operations. I rarely get to the counter except for the red-eye....And I work after 3pm in the afternoon....

Have a great trip.

The CRJ-200 isn't bad at all. I flew ABQ-SLC-ABQ in June and July on SkyWest and I found the CRJ to be comfortable. They are much more comfortable than CO's crappy old B733s.

The reason New Mexico is so windy is because Texas sucks and Arizona blows.

I'd say that SkyWest does a decent job with the product they are contracting to DAL.

F9's product is good as well--flown them a few times this summer and have been very happy with the service, comfort of the A/C....

That said, OO has the cuter flight attendents (these chicks love to party) while F9's seems to love hiring hot, Southern California looking blond pilots!

I can't tell you how many of these hotties come through ABQ.

I spent an entire day in N12318 a few weeks ago doing DEN-EWR-IAH-SLC. Now, THAT was fun...  crowded

Next trip: SLC-LAX-JFK-LAX-SLC on AA, gotta say goodbye to my beloved 762!
