I am pretty bored tonight and I have been listening to JFK ATC (The controllers are rather entertaining). I figured I would throw out some mindless discussion. I did a search and it seems that this topic has not been discussed in a while, I could be wrong.

I am intrigued by some of the callsigns I hear since they are rather creative not relying on the airline name as the callsign, but using something symbolic, so I decided to look some up.

Few of my favorites are:

Speedbird for British Airways
Springbok for South African Airways
Redwood for Virgin America
Suckling for Scot Airways
Ugly Van for Inter Island Air

What are yours?

Good flight... Great night.

It's 737s, 747s and 380s. Not 737's, 747's and 380's. Learn to use the apostrophe for crying out loud.

You pointed out most of the interesting ones I can think of off the top of my head, though I have to say, Redwood is a unique one.

I always thought Blue Ridge for DH was good, but WaterSki for Tran States is kind of weird, but I like them both..
But I think Airtran should be PeachTree other then Citrus...

Hope you folks like FLAGSHIP for Pinnacle. This airline started out as Republic Express a/k/a Express Airlines I which later became NW Airlink. I was involved in the original certification and obtained the callsign from the FAA from the defunct Dolphin Airlines which I also had a hand in starting back in 1981.

The original AirTran and the present AirTran were/are HQed in Orlando, Fla, thus the Citrus callsign. Nothing beats ValuJet's Critter call-sign though.
