This coming weekend I will be traveling MSP-PDX-HNL. I will be having a 1.5 hour lay over at PDX. I was wondering if there is anything neat to see there. I will be continuing on to HNL for a week in the sun and surf. If anyone has any suggestions from PDX or my vacation in Oahu let me know as I am still deciding what to do to fill my time there.

Well.... 1.5 isn't a long time to do a MAX ride somewhere but there is plenty of shopping (tax free!) and restaurants to pass the time. Both Stanfords and Rose City Cafe have decent views of the north side of the C concourse and the south side of the D concourse. You do have to go outside of security for most of the shopping and both restaurants previously mentioned- but it's worth it in my opinion.

If you like wine or sushi- the Rose City Cafe has a wine bar as well as pretty good sushi.

Walk down to the end of the "E" concourse (it's a straight shot from where you'll be arriving) and look out the window at Mt. Hood. It's fantastic.

If you're lucky, you'll fly right by it on your way into PDX.

There are actually quite a few restaurants and shops that are located past security at PDX. A full listing can be found at the PDX website at:

Also, the new "Concourse Connector," a walkway connecting the C and D concourses, now allows you to walk between the south and north concourses (A, B, and C to the south; D and E to the north) without having to exit through security.

PDX also has free wi-fi which the PDX website indicates offers coverage to 70 percent of the terminal's main level.

As far as spotting, PDX's main active runways are parallel to the south and north concourses, so there are good opportunities to watch arrivals and departures from the B and C concourses to the south and the D and E concourses to the north. As NWAESC points out above, there is a view from the east end of the E concourse towards Mt. Hood, so if the north runway is using east arrivals you can watch planes making their final approach with Mt. Hood in the background. It is quite a stunning view.
