When I searched for this I didn't find anything, so I started this thread.

Here are the airlines in the world so far (not including airlines that don't have service anymore, cargo airlines, or regional airlines): NW, WN, FL, ATA (American Trans Air), AZ, BA, AF, VS, Virgin America, World Airways, SY, CO, South African Airways, DL, B6, F9, UA, AA, YX, G4, JL, KE, KL, ANA, Thai Airways, Vietnam Airlines, KQ, Czech Airlines, EI, BD, US/HP, QF, Qatar Airways, EK, Champion Air, Asiana, LH, Ryan Air, Ryan International, Miami Air, FI, Air Berlin, AC, West Jet, AS, RJ, AM, Varig, Air New Zealand, Corsair.

I know that I forgot some. So how many airlines are there in the world?

Understatement!!! Good source would be something like airfleets, and also the photo database here might help.

Not sure of the total but there are many hundreds of airlines especially if you include small commuter/charter operators.

Around 240 international airlines with scheduled services are members of IATA, the major interntional airline trade association. Here is the current membership list:
http://www.iata.org/membership/airline_members?All=true

But that doesn't include the many airlines that only operate domestic routes, and many low-cost and leisure/charter carriers operating international routes that are not members of IATA.

I'd be estimating between 10 and 20 thousand, if your including the various small regional air services. There are so many like this who operate services, although they may only have just a single small aircraft, they still qualify as being an airline.

It would be just about impossible to list them all here, one way would be to take a sample of various countries and from that work out the average number of airlines per country and then multiply that by about 200; there are 193 countries, but many more autonomous regions who have their own 'national' airlines, Air Greenland for example.
