Eastern And Western: Paint Or Bare Metal?

On several recent threads lately a large number of a.netters have indicated that they like the long-standing American Airlines livery. Among the reasons people give is that they like the bare metal aspect of the AA scheme. This got me thinking, is it bare metal that is so appealing, or just that it seems to work so well with the AA livery? A good way to get a sense of what the answer is to this question is to look at Eastern and Western, two airlines that had consecutive liveries that were almost identical to each other except one was on white paint and the other on bare metal. So two questions:
1. Which do you prefer, the Eastern "wings of man" livery on white paint or on bare metal?
2. Which do you prefer, the Western "swizzle stick" livery on white paint or on bare metal?

I vote for the painted look on both.

For Eastern, the two hues look much more striking on the polished silver of the unpainted birds. On white, there's less contrast and they look like two bland shades of blue.

As for Western, while I am a big fan of the giant "W" down the side of the plane, I think the double colored "W" stands out more and makes more of a statement than the original orange/pink/red (whatever color that is!) on the older version.

Painted. Both. AA did their chrome white. Western's looks too beer-can-like. Eastern's, well, white just looks better.

If you go back to the late 1940's and early 1950's, there were many airlines with bare metal planes and I like all of them. These included Pan American, TWA, Eastern, Northeast, KLM and even SAS. The white tops helped keep the cabins cooler in the sunshine and reduce corrosion and maintenance overall. The white versions of Western and Eastern "hockey stick" are nicer than the more frugal beer can versions.
