Pardon my ignorance on this subject, but should I recommend flying Air Europa from Madrid to The Dominican republic if she is afraid of flying? Have their been any safety issues with Air Europa?

They are as safe as any european legacy carrier like IB, LH, AF, etc. Of course being a small airline with few long haul routes they are less known specially outside Europe.

I have flown on Air Europa a number of times, but only on the European network. Their short haul fleet of B737-800s is very modern and flight attendants are pleasant. On the European network, the food is for purchase so I cannot comment on the quality of catering. What I can say, however, is that out of the numerous times I have flown them, only once has the plane been delayed - at that for not more than one hour. My latest flight was yesterday from Valencia to Paris CDG and we arrive in Paris 25 minutes early!!!!
Only negative comment: I wish they would change their livery - it is SOOOOOO boring.

I have flown on Air Europa from Madrid to Salvador, Brazil. Ok service, cabin crew are friendly and young. They took me from A to B on time. The food was ok, and there was free drink to dinner. But after that you had to pay for drinks. Water I think was free!

You should always say "yes, they are safe", "yes, they have a good safety record"... why make things worse, right?
JAL, American Airlines, United Airlines, Singapore Airlines, Air France, Lufthansa, Swissair, SAS... they are major carriers, and they all suffered accidents .
She should take some sleeping pills and enjoy the flight.

Because she have travelled allot to different places, and confirms with me if airlines are okay. When she was in Indonesia this winter, the plane she flew fell a few 1000 feet. I confirmed that this particular airline was safe and added "if your are flying on an A320". She did not get that last part and flew a different type. So now I make sure not to recommend some airline if I don't know them and I don't sort them by airplane type anymore

Cool! What is the difference between PTV and IFE? Do you have to pay for PTV?
PTV stands for "Private Television" and IFE stands for In-flight Entertainment. You do not have to pay to view the TV in most airlines. Most airlines offer some sort of IFE whether PTVs or wall mounted TVs or just music but not all offer PTV. Do you now understand the difference or have I pushed it too far?
One more abbreviation you might come across is AVOD which stands for Audio and Video on Demand. On some airlines, you can watch any movie at any time on your screen, you can also fast forward or pause it while in some airlines, they just play it and you try to catch it I am not sure if Air Europe offers AVOD. They probably do though as they are flying a brand new plane on the route...
