May end up spending 13 hrs in AMS in late Dec. My passport doesn't allow me to leave the transit area so any downtown visit is not possible. I know i can spot planes for several hours but 13 is a bit of a long time..

Thanks..

If I was you, book a room in the hotel which is located INSIDE the terminal (no need to go through immigration). Just relax, take a shower, maybe go to the sauna or just watch some tv, in the privacy of your own room and be fit for the next flight.

13 hrs is a long time, even at Schiphol.  Cool

The first point is that the observation terrace will not the open continously for 13 hours, secondly it is not clear what time you are arriving and departing which may restrict the times available as will the need for food. Furthermore it will be getting dark by 1600. If you stay out all day you risk frostbite anyway.

Finally, does the 13 hours include deplaning and re planing.

You can always hang out in the casino and play blackjack or the slots.

He will not be able to visit the observation terrace anyway, since you need to go through immigration to get there and:

Do not bring stranger girt into your room. The stranger girt is dangerous, it will hurt your life.

How does your passport not allow you to leave the transit area, if its a regular US passport there should be no issues.

Plans have changed. I was able to book the morning flight to IST. But I still have 5 hrs tomorrow in AMS which will be an easy time to pass with all that morning flight activity.

And wish that one day KL would use them for SFO-AMS.

Ironic because a quick check of Flightaware shows that their was an MD-11 sub today on SFO-AMS....

Dammit  Angry

In the not too distant past, the MD-11 was a regular on this route.

That i did.. It was even a shorter brake than 5 hrs. Had to be at the gate at 11:25 am for 1:05pm departure. So, by the time i arrived at 8:10 am it wasn't a long layover. It still was very nice airport though.. Last time i have been there was in 1993 and i am sure things have changed since then..
