No, you're not missing anything. I tried the seats out when VS flew an A346 into MSY and I was dissapointed. Those seats are not really that great. To me, it seemed incredibly cramped in those shoe boxes. I'd much rather fly VS in premium economy rather than in those seats.
Here's a picture for reference. Note that i'm not a small dude, although I can fit just fine in a normal seat without overlapping into my neighbor's space:

These are the same seats that NZ have right ? I flew on NZ and found the seats were great - not THAT wide, but comfortable enough and sleeping flat was brilliant. I have no problem with herringbone seats (I flown on AC's as well, which were just as good) - better than front-facing slopey-flat seats any day.
