Cheap Fares Between SXM And SJU?

Airfares between SXM and SJU, one-way, are $300-ish. Isn't that a little steep for a one-hour flight? Looks like AA has the entire market to themselves. Can anybody suggest an alternative?

We'll be flying SXM to ORD in mid-November, and United doesn't offer the nonstop during the week. We'd like to stay on United. So we're thinking about buying a ticket SXM-SJU and connecting with United there.

Have you looked into buying a return ticket and just do not show up for the return leg ?
Carefully select the day of the return leg in very low season and this sometimes is cheaper than a oneway-ticket ...

One broker shows connections on LI via ANU (Antigua), but these appear to be not necessarily cheaper than AA's nonstops, but might be worth the check.
