Quoting JetJeanes (Thread starter):
America West

Technically America West bought US Airways and kept the US name, since it was more national in scope.

Metrojet??

Metrojet was US' attempt at a vacationer oriented LCC like Song, TED, and such.

I think that's AC Jazz. AC and ACJ are all owned by ACE Aviation.

You're missing Eastern Provincial Airways, the regional carrier and 737 operator based in YHZ that was purchased by CP Air in the mid-1980s. You could also add Canadian Airlines' regional carrier Ontario Express that operated quite a few BAe Jetstream 31s on shorthaul routes from YYZ, mostly to points in Ontario.

And Canadian Pacific Air Lines itself was the result of the merger of 10 small western Canadian airlines in 1942. Several of the other airlines mentioned were also involved in their own earlier mergers, e.g. PWA bought YWG-based Transair in 1972, and later acquired YVR-based B.C. Airlines.

I never did understand the details, but didn't AC take over Roots Air, just to close it?

Tracing the family tree of Northwest Airlines:

West Coast, Pacific, & Bonanza merged to become Air West. Howard Hughes company bought the airline and it became Hughes Air West.

Southern & North Central merged to become Republic, later taking on Hughes Air West.

Republic was bought out by Northwest.
