ERJ Vs. CRJ

Last week I took a trip down to PNS and on the outbound flight I flew on the Crappy Regional Jet. This plane is absolutely horrible and worthless compared to the Enjoyable Regional Jet (ERJ). The ERJ had large windows that actually sat high enough for one to comfortable look out of. I couldnt even see out of the CRJ cuz the windows were so small and low. Does anyone else think the ERJ is superior to the CRJ? What is the difference in economics between the two? Any other opinions are welcome regarding these two planes.

any ERJ, especially the EMB 170/190, are superior to any CRJ, period. The window is big, its in the right spot, there is a lot of leg room and head room. they are quiet and very comfortable.

A guy i know who used to work for Canadair told me the secret as to why the windows on the CRJ are so low. They really aren't placed too low, it's that the floor is too high! The Canadair guys designed the ECS pack bay too small so when they went to install it the first time, it didnt fit and had to move the floor up to compensate. And thus no head room and too low of windows.

Interesting point. Thanks for that info. That does make sense but nevertheless it's nowhere near as comfortable as the ERJ 145 I believe I was on (Continental Express).

I assume your trip was on a CRJ-100/200. The -700/900 (and coming -1000) are much better with repositioned windows and significantly updated interiors. I haven't heard many negative comments about the -700/900. The latest "Next Gen" models are even better with slightly larger windows, overhead bins and other improvements.

The -100/200 originated from the Canadair Challenger business jet which probably also has something to do with the window placement as I believe the windows are identical.

Right, but you still have to lean back to see out of them, and god help you if your not tan, the lights will wash your right out. A RJ is an RJ.

Frankly, I like them both. A high point for the ERJ is the fact that it has a one seat side, so you don't have to worry about climbing over anyone when you have to get up! On the other hand, the CRJ-700 is quiet and also has a comfortably sized cabin.

Lately I've had to take many CRJ (mostly CRJ-200's) flights. yuck  Even though I love flying, I don't look forward to any of these flights. Then a few months ago I took a trip on a CO ERJ. The difference was amazing. Big windows and much quieter in my opinion. All in all, the ERJ-145 is superior to the CRJ-200. The ERJ-170/190's are superior to any CRJ IMHO.

From a Passenger point of view, the ERJ is a better plane. From a logistical point of view, the CRJ seems to win hands down. According to what people have told me, the CRJ has a far better dispatch reliability rating than the ERJ (The only thing hurting the CRJ is the fact that Mesa is a big operator of the type). Pilots tell me that the CRJ is easier to fly, is more fuel efficient, plus operators of the type who also operate the 700 and 900 series (Which would be just about every US operator of the type save for Air Wisconsin) can use the same crews as one type rating covers the whole series, where as the 170 is a different type rating from the 135-145. (If there is one issue that Republic Air group has its this, otherwise they have very good leadership over there) Based on my own observations, performance in the CRJ seems to be better than the ERJ.

That being said, I know very little about the ERJ other than from Flight Sim (I have an ERJ add on for Flight sim from wilco pub and it is amazing). I do know the CRJ very well though, since thats what I work with. Quite frankly, no regional jet will ever come close to a Boeing or Airbus in terms of reliability, performance, and economics. But the CRJ's and the ERJ's both have their benefits and downfalls. Pax tend to focus on only the comfort, where other people like myself, want to see the whole package.

I've flown on both, and I actually like the CRJ family the most. I'll freely admit that there could be some bias in the fact that I've flown them all with Air Nostrum and that I have only been on the ERJ once, but I just felt so much more cramped on the Embraer, the headroom was minimal and even though I was sat in the A seats I still managed the whack my head on the overheads on the opposite side of the cabin. Still, I am flying it again in a few days time, so hopefully this will be a better experience.

That is for sure. I really enjoyed my flight on a 900.

Last week I flew FRA-LEJ on a E-170. It was my first time on a E-170 and I really enjoyed it.

The best of the best for a RJ is the ARJ-85. I used to love to fly to STL on those when NW (Mesaba) had them.

I think I like the CRJ better, mainly the -700 and -900. Last time I was on an Embraer, it was on a -145 with Continental Express. The overhead bins were low, the seats narrow, and the aisle narrow. The CRJs have a lot more room in them.

I prefer the ERJ as well - I like the "A" side single seat, and the window is actually usuable (although I did fly on a CRJ900 at Christmas and the windows on them are properly placed.) Seats, at least on CoEx's are more comfortable than any CRJ I've been on, and the ERJ's lavatory is larger and more comfortable than most mainline jets.

Only drawback to the ERJ is the tiny, tiny bins - CRJ definitely better in this regard.

Tall people may prefer the aisles on the CRJ, though - I'm only 5'10", so I'm fine with the ERJ.

I'm with you on this one. More 1-1 service I find. When I fly down to LHR with BD I always look for the odd ERJ service that sometimes happens. Yet to try the CRJ but there arn't that many flights from Scotland on the CRJ, shame.

I find it interesting that the E145 is perceived to be more spacious than the CRJ200. Seat width is the same (17"), aisle is the same (16") but headroom is 1,2 inches LESS on the E145 (182 cm compared to 185 cm on the CR2).

That A seat on the E145 must be something special indeed... but what if you're seated in B or C on the E145, after all there is a 67% chance you'll end up doing just that. Does it become hell then?  Smile

Many CRJ operators have the extended rear lav, making it more bearable.

The E145 (and of course 135 and 140) also only have overhead bins on the right side of the cabin, meaning much less stowage carry-on stowage space than a CRJ with bins on both sides.

When LX operated the E145 and Saab 2000 (they had about 25 of each - all sold a few years ago) I liked flying both types but preferred the Saab. Although both had the same 1-2 seating layout, the Saab's seats were more comfortable and the fuselage seemed slightly wider. The Saab overhead bins (also on the right side only) were also slightly larger than on the E145.

Well, I gave the ERJ another chance, but it still failed to impress me that much. The headroom was even less than I had imagined, and inside it felt so very cramped - almost claustrophobic, so in short I will still be booking CRJ flights over the Embraer.

Out of interest Dan, whose ERJ did you fly? Not that it makes much difference IMO - I've tried both the ERJ (with BA, BD and BE) and the CRJ (with VB) and ERJ wins hands down. If I can't get a BAe146/Avro RJ then the ER4 comes a very close second for me!

ERJ vs CRJ:
Comparing the "original" ones (EMB-135/140/145 vs. CRJ-100/200), not the off-springs/advanced ones (ERJ-170/190 , CRJ-700/900):
Both series have their disadvantages IMO:
  • Cabin height is too low for me, but then I am standing 6"3, so I have problems with many smaller a/c ...
  • Windows are much better in size and position on the ERJ.
  • Overhead bins are better on the CRJ, but also not "good".
  • Flying comfort (based on the a/c, not on the airline) is okay with both types.
  • Seat comfort varies quite a bit on the ERJ: I have had very pleasant flights with LX on HB-JAN enabling me to sleep tight, but also horrible ones (having paid a Business fare) on AF (Regional).
  • Thrust reversers should be mandatory not optional on the ERJ (BA (TH) managed to overshoot a wet 7677 ft-runway at HAJ with an ERJ 3 years ago).
  • Sitting in the last two or three rows of the CRJ there is a disturbing noise in form of a rather high frequency tone.
  • Overall noise levels are okay for me.


Bottomline:
I have no real favourite among the two groups.
When flying to Paris (CDG) for a business trip, I prefer the LH CRJ partially due to its slightly more spacious overhead bins that will hold more pax's laptop computers than AF's ERJ.

ERJ > CRJ Any day. Especially the CR7 is absolute garbage. Its uncomfortable, bad window views and not to mention extremely unreliable! I have not seen a aicraft that goes tech so often as the CR7. I wish MQ would get rid of them! One plus of the CR7: I love the way it looks like!

My biggest problem on both ERJ and CRJ always is: The cabin is not high enough for me! I am 6'3" and if I don't watch out, I hit my head on the ceiling! Thank god I don't need to stand too long in that cabin! Wouldn't do my back very good!
And it's just small! I don't like both of them very much!
Haven't tried the the E 190 or E170 yet, but I hope I will in may on AC...
