Has Any Merger Benefited You As A Customer?

Well has it?
It seems like when ever two companies merge, the customers and employees get the short end of the stick with higher fees, less service and layoffs. Regardless of the industry; airlines, banks and phone companies, mergers always seem to be a bad idea in the end. I am not at all excited about any of the proposed mergers between United, Continental, Northwest and Delta.

Does anyone here have any success stories as a customer or employee?
If there are any former Saint Louis based TWA employees, I'd really like to hear your input.

The only merger of sorts that I can think of when it comes to any sort of benefiting would be the AF/KL. Internally there may have been some shuffling around. And besides the random strike in France, I really haven't seen much in terms of bad ramifications on the customer.

So I guess if the customer isn't affected in any way by the merger, that would be the best thing?

Not a merger, but "Take over": For me travelling options have widened by LH taking over LX.

One thing that went as a result of this merger is the competition these two airlines had for pax originating in Germany, thus in many cases the lowest fares offered went up.

Also, when booking with either KL or AF's website, one (almost) never gets offered connections on "the other" airline, so flying out via CDG and return via AMS is between "difficult" to "no-no".
This definitely is different when booking with LH, while LX's website needs to be "persuaded" to show also LH-flights via FRA or MUC, but it was no problem booking such flights (which turned out to be even cheaper than on LH's website).

When I retired, I had hundred of thousands of unused US Dividend Miles - was a Chairman's Preferred. I have over a hundred thousand America West Miles - was Platinum with them I moved back to Alaska, and no way to use the miles . . . US didn't fly here. America West had a limited schedule here.

Then US because part of Star Alliance. I was able to start burning off some of those miles.

When the merger happened, I was able to combine my mileage, and start using the miles to travel on both route systems.

Not quite a merger, but SAA joining Star has been a bonus for me.

I'm a regular on SAA and now get the chance to do some real damage with all those acquired Voyager miles!

I am in the same boat as ANC. Had over 100,000 miles on FlightFund at HP and now can go to LHR, ZUR, and soon China!

As a customer -- AA buy out of TW. . . AA took my 150k TW Aviator miles . . . I used them on AA, no prob.

Employee stories. Well, second hand from a couple friends who were long time TW. TW flight attendants got the shaft from AA, as was much publized. A friend of ours was a STL based Captain for TW -- he made the seniority cut and is still a Captain for AA.

I agree with your comment.

Due to the many flights I must to make all year round to Africa, the merger of AF and KLM was perfect to me to earn some miles and to get some free flights to spend my holidays with my wife.

By the way, my wife is my travel agent and knows that if I fly with KLM or AF our holidays will be better than the last year.

In 2007 we stayed in St. Barths and we flew there with an AF 744 to SXM and return with the same aircraft.

This year, we plan to visit French Polynesia...

Then NW and US merge and join Star! That's my dream lol. i'd have like 40,000 miles lol

I think HP and US was actually beneficial to folks in the Midwest who fly both east and west; from Chicago and St. Louis, US was great when I needed to get to ILM or BUF but not so good for going to TUS or SMF, and the opposite was true for HP. While there are still destinations to which US isn't a good option from this part of the world, there are far fewer.

That's how I wound up with so many miles on both carriers. My business kept me on the East Coast/Mid-West - living in DC. The natural choice was US. But I had to go to MRY at least twice - sometimes more - a month. And the 4pm HP departure from DCA to MRY via PHX was the natural choice on a Friday. By the time I retired and moved back to Alaska - I had these miles and no where to spend them.

If I may dare to be different, I will point out that a "divorce" of sorts, instead of a merger, has benefitted me!

When Continental dropped ExpressJet from a lot of routes, XE started flying some point-to-point routes - and one of them was a route I have been wishing and hoping and praying and pleading and begging for since I moved to San Diego - SAN-BFL!! In fact, the first time I saw the ad and the route they would be flying, I stared in disbelief - I simply could not make my eyes accept what they were seeing.

I have flown them quite a few times up and back and they have saved me uncounted hours of stress, frustration, and $3.70 a gallon gas (that's the going rate in SoCal now!)...so in this case, I'm GLAD they separated!!

CO taking over the PeopleExpress hub at EWR (a while back I know) has definitely been helpful for me and even more so for my father who works a short distance from the airport.
