Transcon US Business Class: UA Or AA

Which is better?

Is it true that AA has 50" of legroom on the 762 vs. UA's 40"? Also, what about food/wine/service? Which is superior?

I have flown UA only, and I am curious as to your opinions. I don't think that UA's is all that great, unless you're on an international 763, which I hear they're going to use to replace the 762s. I'm most interested to hear about the difference in food, service, etc.

Thanks in advance!

Yes, it' true about the pitch difference. I've never flown these routes in business so I couldn't tell you anything new. Only that if you go w/ UA, then go try to get on one of there 767-300 international flights that they fly transcon. I believe they use this aircraft on about 2 flights during the day. On this plane, UA's pitch is better at 55" and you have PTV's unlike any of AA's 767's.

COEWR,

I have experienced this, and you're right, it's great.

Anyone know anything about the difference in service between AA and UA??

i have found AA busines product on the transcon very pleasant. the wine selection has generally been quite good, as it is something AA has always prided themselves on. it is true the entertainment is a bit lacking, but if you sit in the center section, second row back, you have a great big screen in front of you with little obstruction.

i also prefer the seats on AA over the UA seats--which are less comfy. food was quite good and plentiful (i was unable to eat everything they offered--and i will eat anything!), service pleasant, and overall i would say a better experience than UA. but in terms of discrete service difference, there are none. if anything, i prefer AA because of the seats.

On the JFK-LAX route, AA has UA beat in two important places:

1. Consistency; all the flying is done with 767-200 Aircraft, while UA is a mix of 767-300 and 767-200.

2. Frequency; AA has 12 weekday flights, while UA has only 7.

I have NEVER (and I mean NEVER) had a bad transcon flight on UA whether in first, business or economy.

I've always been a big fan of UA's service...

I did UA from SFO-BOS in F Class before. Despite the seat is a bit old it is still pretty comfortable (good Recline). Also they have a Video Cassette player and a selection of movies. However there was only 1 FA in the section (I think 10 pax in total incl a lot of NON-Rev)

Food was good and I slept really well as I just came from SYD and was jetlagging.

However I tried their J Class on a 767 from BOS-LHR. Which was terrible. In terms of the seat size, pitch, food and service etc.... The J Class on 777 and 744 is much better. But I guess they don't offer too many 777 or 744 within US Domestic?

For AA, if the plane used is a MD80 then forget it. The seats in F Class = uncomfortable and no legrest as well.

Can't comment on the 767 as i never travelled on that before, but the 777 is OK, I prefer UA's J Class more than AA.

Also with UA you get Priority Baggage, but the CHECKIN agent in AA told me Priority baggage is not available in Domestic US flights?

I don't think that's a real advantage at all. The 763 on UA is excellent. The pitch in J is 55" (more than AA's 50") and the F class is wonderful, since it's an international plane. I hear that they are going to use these transon when they get rid of the 762.

But, comparing 762 to 762, it seems that AA has UA beat.

For a long international segment, the 763 is..... ugh....

Cx123,

Thank you for your input. However, I think you're confusing a lot of domestic/international service on AA and UA.

This is NOT your fault, since here in the USA, we call the front cabin of a TWO class plane "First", when it should really be called "Business". It's really stupid.

Domestically, we only use the CORRECT terms for class of service on transcon routes, where there are three classes. UA and AA provide this "premium" service on flights to/from JFK to/from SFO and LAX. They are supposed to mimic international service, although the plane is a 762 vs. a 763 or 777 that both carriers use internationally. Sometimes UA subs a three class 763 (which I just got off of tonight), and that's awesome!

And now on to the big debate:
What is UA going to replace those 762s with? I don't think it will be a 757. How do you compete with that?

They are going to replace them with the three-class 763s that they have started running on those routes. They need to use a three class plane, so this is the only one that makes sense.

Obviously not! The MD-80 hardly has the range to fly that route. I mean... it has 100 mile slack at bes (with rerserves) and that would not do well if there is wx. Please check facts before posting. The ONLY planes AA uses transcon are 757s and 767s. To LAX its almost ALLWAYS 767s.

Indeed, AA also flies 738s from LAX, SFO, and SEA now.

UA has recently upgraded its food, wine and service in both C and F (domestic and International) - and I can tell you - it's great! Without a doubt, the best service/food of any US carrier. On the food vector, especially departing SFO/LAX, it's warm nuts, choice of entree/appetizer and ice cream sundaes for dessert.  Smile

Plus, the attitude of UA FAs has improved *dramatically* in the past six months, making them (once again) among the friendliest and highest-quality folks in the sky. I will even say that on some recent flights, their service ethic has exceeded that of SQ and CX. Shocking? Yes - but true.

Although the US domestic carriers will not compete with CX/SQ on total service in front cabins (I mean food/wine/caviar mostly), UA is going above and beyond to reestablish their premium cabins - and it shows.

FWIW, there is little clarity on whether the 762 replacement will come from a reconfigured 757 (with 3 full cabins) or the 763s. Either way, the UA product is great - especially when you factor in the in-flight service piece.

hmm, well from JFK-LAX/SFO, AA operates a three class 762 (in addition to the occasional 757), and i was surprised to see a 763 on a ticket i booked for november as their 763s are only two class.

still it goes back to the seat for me. the UA business seats are old, shoddy, and not too comfortable, against the AA seats.

Gabrielz-- agree with you re being very happy with UA's service. (There's a reason I went from UA 1P & AA GLD last year, to UA 1K & AA Nada this year....) I've always been very pleased with UA's service levels, and agree completely that the FA attitudes this year have been very much improved over previous years. All this said, I'm a pretty low-maintenance pax (as long as my glass if full  Big grin )...which also contributes to happier FAs! It's also amazing how far it will go by just being nice to the FAs and treating them as people too, rather than just as "some airline employee" whose sole purpose in being there is to make said pax happy (NOT!) For those not happy with the service....that's why there are other carriers!

There are a lot of rumours floating around if the 762 will be replaced by the 3-class 757 or the 763....we'll see!

thats another thing i dont understand Ordinduaflyer--if one is pleasant enough, dare say, NICE to the f/a then you can almost certainly expect the same courtesy returned to you.

i have only found one f/a of the dozens i have dealt with this year alone, to be at all "not nice" which isn't to say she was rude. probably a bad day.

people who complain about bitchy service ought to check their bitchy attitudes with their luggage. oh wait, they are probably the same people who bring more than the alloted carry on! haha.

oh yeah, did i tell you all how much i love the AA biz seats? haha.

VSLover -- EXACTLY! And if you're really nice, sometimes you'll get special treatment (gotta love those doggie bags!)  Big grin

I really enjoy heading up/back to the galley and chatting with the FAs, usually en route to/from the lav or to get a refill on my drink while stretching my legs. It's nice to learn more about their jobs, attitudes w/in the airline, etc...and I've also been able to teach them a little bit about MP (I'm still amazed at how many airline employees don't know much at all about their FF programs unless they're working for that part of the company)
