Well...here's the deal, I'm not really a frequent flyer! I have a flight booked this summer with IB to ALG from MIA. So, I'm thinking of maybe joining Iberia Plus, which obviously entitles me to other OW carriers mileage accrual. I usually, at the least, fly every winter and summer to long-haul destinations. I know I'm not a frequent flyer but it feels just like a waste to let the mileage for flights I am taking just not count.
Joining is free so I won't be losing money or anything, but do you guys think it's worth it?
Also, if I do join, the flight to ALG has been booked since Jan. If I join now I can still get mileage for this flight, right?

One time, my dad was booking a flight for me on Delta. I had 22.5k miles on my WorldPerks account, but my dad accidently signed me up for SkyMiles. The trip was only like 2k miles so I didn't mind. My flight was canceled so Delta gave me an extra 500 miles. 22.5k plus 2.5k equals....25K, a free ticket. But it went to my DL account . DL's miles expire too, so I'm a little far from that ticket.

No reason why not. 99.9% of the FFP out there are free to sign up, so it doesn't cost you anything. If you're flying twice a year long-haul, they'll add up pretty quick.
I'm currently in a ton of FFPs but only really use three of them - DL (have about 110k miles in there), US (about 20k miles) and AA (about 10k miles). I have a handful of points (less than 1000 or 1 credit) on my FL, NW, CO and BA accounts. No real need to have a ton of FFPs - I just focus on DL, AA and right now US (as soon as I get 25k miles, I'm cashing those for a ticket on UA and dumping US for UA as my Star Alliance FFP) and they add up.

The advantage of the Midwest Miles and Continental OnePass program is that using Amtrak Guest Rewards, you can transfer miles between the two in 5k increments. Problem is, if I were to fly NW, I'd have to decide which program to use, as both codeshare with NW.

Airlines already compensate for any free tickets or products bought with air miles in your ticket price. That means, if you don't earn any miles with a frequent flyer program, you are giving the airlines some extra money... you wouldn't want that now... would you?
I also agree with the other responses, try to find the frequent flyer program where your miles last the longest.

Yes, definately sign up. The very first time I flew I decided not to sign up for a frequent flyer program, telling myself I wouldn't be flying very much anyway. That turned out to be a big mistake. As it turned out I ended up flying on United quite a bit after that, and mostly transcons. I did eventually join MilesPlus, but if I'd joined before that first flight I'd definately have enough miles for a free flight by now.

If worse comes to worst, and you don't accrue enough miles to cash in, at least you can donate them to a charity at let them use them. Most non-profits that need them for their recipients can combine them, so every little bit can help.
I've done that twice with UA and US miles...I rarely get the opportunity to fly, and my choice is almost always what's cheapest. I'm a member with ExpressJet, and I'm actually getting ready to use mine - imagine, only 42 years old and I'm getting a free FF trip!!

Already getting 10k UA miles next week simply for graduating from college (when I told my friend who's a UA 2P that's graduating next month, he was quite excited - and he gets it next year too since he'll get his masters then; 5 year program gets you a Masters in Accounting).
Since I'm planning on moving to LAS after graduating, I figure I'll be on UA a decent bit going through LAX, or crediting my US miles to UA (although with US downgrading LAS, I might be doing the 40 minute hop to SoCal a bit...)

One of the best FFP in the UK is certainly Blue Diamond Club of Bmi: last time I flew a AMS-LHR-AMS return with them and got 4500 'destination' miles i.s.o. the usual 800, so some BD mileage-offers are really very good, if not the best in the Star-Alliance !!!

I am booked LHR - SFO in Economy (ticket Economy Lowest) and LAX - LHR (Premium economy lowest) both booked through Virgin Holidays. Is there any difference in the benefits I would gain from using on FFP over the other - I have low miles at present and no status with either.

keep in mind you can also earn on things other than the flights eg. Aeroplan @ Esso (exxon) gas station. 22 miles for 48 litres of gas, not alot, but i was buying that gas anyways. Also many FFPs have a credit card deal so every time you spend on anything at all anywhere you earn. many also have a signup bonus of like 15,000 for the credit card.
