I was wondering if anyone has been through gate 1 in the WN terminal at LAX. If you have you know what I am talking about. I think that it is so cool. Please correct me if I am wrong, but I think that only gates 1 and 2 are like that. My dad told me that it is a tow in gate. When were walking to where we parked the car, you could see the plane. That is how close it is. Anyways, I was wondering why it is like that. Thanks in advance. Any answers would be greatly appraited.

The gate 1 area you see today is different the the original gate when the terminal opened in 1984.
Originally the large area (which was called gate A, then 100) was a holding area designed as a busing gate.
People Express for a while used T-1 and would have its 747 parked at the remotes with passengers being bussed back and forth.
Only in the mid 90s, did things start looking as they do today when the city put up a jetway and made it into gate 1.
For the record the terminals original gate 1 was what is basically todays gate 3B and was used by America West. The airport along with tenants have reconfigured the facility over the years to allow for additional gates as practically speaking its a near all small narrow body A32X/737 operation with minimal need to accommodate larger types. (US brings a 757/767 on occasion).

I remember hearing about Gate 1 while watching 'Airline', but I finally saw what it was like back in January. My flight actually came into Gate 2, but I can imagine that the rampers must be on their toes when working a/c at that gate.

I have flown in and out of both Gates 1 and 2. I enjoy looking at at the art display as I walk up the winding halls. These gates do look cramped for ground services but allow for additional gates. Since the WN/US terminal is always busy, these gates provide a bit of calm.
