Headrests On The Long Haul: Make A Difference?

Hi Everyone,

I know that on long-haul flights (international transatlantic and transpacific) some US airlines fly planes that have seats with headrests in coach:

AA: 763, 777
CO: 762, 764, 777 (752?)
DL: 777
UA: 777 (763?)
US: A330
NW: A330

...but also fly planes long-haul without headrests:

AA: 752 (pre-refurbishment)
CO: 752?
DL: 763, 752
UA: 747 (763?)
US: 762, 752
NW: 744, 752

Please correct me if I'm wrong on any of the above accounts, but I'm curious whether people find that headrests makes a significant impact on in-flight comfort, and why airlines have not made/whether they should make headrests standard at least for long-haul flights. I personally think that headrests are really helpful, especially on overnight flights, as they provide for a lot of head and neck support, in addition to almost serving as a built-in pillow. At the same time, on some planes it isn't completely built "into" the seat, instead protruding forward which could potentially be annoying (possible example: older AA 763s). What are your thoughts?

I think they are just great as they provide good head support, and btw it prevents you ending up with your seatmate head in your shoulder!!

If so, then I agree. CX flies their sh!tty regional product to some ports in Australia. While they have the fixed bolsters (in Y) so you can rest your headin between, they are nowhere near comfortable enough on their decidely non-regional flight to BNE (8 1/2 hours).

Other CX aircraft have adjustable winged headrests that are soooo much more comfortable.

Sorry, yes I should have clarified that I am talking about winged headrests in which the wings can be adjusted. (Although do headrests where the wings CANNOT be adjusted make a difference compared to no headrest at all?)

Yes, good point. Helps define your space. I use them if I need to zzzzzz on a longer flight. I find I need to use my trusty travel neck pillow in combo to be really comfy. Usually I just can't get the headrest in a perfect position for me without some additional padding.  yawn
