Hi.
Im heading off to Majorca next week & was planning on going to PMI for a few hours (probably on Saturday 5th or Sunday 6th of July) to do some spotting. Can anyone tell me the best possible ways of getting out to the airport & also the best locations?.

Public bus route #1 will take you from Palma city center to the terminal. goto www.aena.es for information about airports in Spain and information how to get there etc.
goto www.emtpalma.es for bus schedules.

However, there are no views from inside the terminal (landside).
Top level of the car park might be okay for the westernly runway only.

For all other location you will need a car or at least a bike:
#1: West of runway 24R on Carrer Lluchmajor - enter "39.554784,2.719846" in google maps for location. Do not go there on foot, as you will have to bypass Palma's "slum" at Son Banya.

#2: Even better is a location further north that can be reached from Son Ferriol: Enter "39.560280, 2.730200" in google maps. This is a dead end with not more than 2 cars to park; keep the entrance to the farm clear ! Stay off the private properties incl. fields.
This location offers good views of runway 24R and western / northern apron. Traffic on runway 24L can be monitored, too, but not much more.

#3: With runway 24L used for arrivals you can also park at location "39.559321, 2.769432" and have a/c buzz right overhead you.

#4: With runway 06R used for departures, try to head for the park at Poligono Son Oms (walking distance from the Playa de Palma): "39.539926,2.735167", but I never had been spotting there yet.

#5: The end of Camino de Son Fangos at 39.548065, 2.707282 can be reached on foot from the nearby Carrefour supermarket, but views from there aren't too good. Do not get fooled by Google maps:The camino is interrupted by the airport perimeter in direction north and you cannot head directly to location #1 (even on foot) !

Plenty of places along the Playa de Palma (from Can Pastilla all the way to El Arenal / S' Arenal) are renting out bikes (like in "bicycles", not "motor bike") per hour, day or multiple days.
Places off the beach road usually are a bit cheaper, but not necessarily (at least in winter, but that's not applicable for you) ...

Where will you be staying ? This might influence your options to get around & where to rent a bike.
Bus #15 runs from Palma (Placa de la Reina, Cathedral) via Placa d'Espanya and Ciutat Jardi to Can Pastila, Platja de Palma and S' Arenal.

I'll be staying in the Santa Ponsa resort so would need a bus to Palma & then another out to the airport itself. Was planning on renting a bicycle from somewhere nearby just to get to the various locations around the airport perimeter. Thanks again for your reply, much appreciated.

You might want to try autobus TIB (the yellow &red coloured ones) L102 from Santa Ponca to Palma, then EMT line 15 to Playa de Palma (direction s'Arenal).
http://tib.caib.es/terrestre/autobusos100.es.htm

I was to suggest to get off at Can Pastilla and rent a bike there, but IIRC the only pedestrian bridge over the motorway to the airport has been closed for years now. This leaves you with only 2 options to cross the motorway only:
First option is at exit #6 of the motorway (exit route Ma-30 or PM-30). This gets you to spots #5 (south) or #1 (more to the north) with the option to head for spot #2 (further north). Then around the airport to the north via Son Ferriol to Sa Casa Blanca and on to spot #3. Then turning south again (driving on busy Ma-5030 and MA-19a) gets you to Poligono Son Oms near exit #10 of the motorway (which is the second option to cross the motorway between the airport and the beach).

If you rent a bike in Playa de Palma, you can head straight for that motorway exit #10 and then go into "Camino de Son Fangos" which leads you (after a right turn) to spot #4.
Do not get fooled by Google Maps: Biking ahead, you can use "Camino de Son Fangos" all the way (direction west) to the airport to the big roundabout under the approach road. Go straight across the roundabout and then turn left after 10 yards into the unnamed street running in parallel to the approach road & later the motorway. Passing some rental car parking lots and some big office towers you will head for spot #1. Before you reach that spot, you will pass underneath the approach of runway 06L. There is a crash gate carved into the rock where you can have a look and hopefully have the a/c pass right overhead you.

Renting a bike at the Playa de Palma, do not get off the bus #15 too soon. Approaching Playa de Palma you will have the Aquarium at your left followed by the only roundabout on that road for miles. After 300 yards there will be a Eurosyp supermarket in a shopping complex on your left where you might stock supplies.
Get off the bus a few yards later (this is stop "Apt. Es Pil-lari" on http://www.emtpalma.es/EMTPalma/Fron...en.svr?accion=entrada&cod_linea=15 ) and you will be facing 2 dark painted highrise buildings (about 20 floors) between you and the beach.
Location: 39.527410, 2.733920
Heading for the beach, pass the right building leaving it to your left. There will be a bike rental in the basement of that building. If you rent for the day only, you might not want to go shopping for lower rates for too long, but this is your decision ...

Do not hesitate to ask for more details.
Have fun on Mallorca (Majorca) !
