How About KLM For Long-haul To South Africa?

I am looking at a trip later this year to South Africa. My choices for transport are SAA n/s from IAD to JNB, or BA via LHR.

I am also thinking about NW/KLM via Amsterdam. One thing I noticed about the service from AMS; the segment from Schipol to Cape Town is a daytime flight, which appeals to me (much of the other service from Europe is overnight).

What could I expect in KLM in cattle class on such long flights? The IAD-AMS segment would be via the A330, the AMS-CPT segment via a 777-300ER. Thanks for any insight!

No KLM advice, only timing advice.

Because of no time difference UK to South Africa night time flights are more popular as people tend to use them for their "hotel" for the night.

If you can make a stopover to recover from your US jetlag in UK/NL then this might make your trip easier.

Well, you can see the thread in the civil aviation fourm called "KLM B77W New Business Class" where you can read how much people don't like KLM's 77W.

Personally though I would go for KLM. Nice service, AMS is the best airport during transfer flights, and they have great AVOD.

I would choose KLM or SAA. Nothing wrong with the 777 economy. If you want, you can splurge E50,- each and secure exit seats.

SAA has a very nice economy. I flew their A340-600 and if I was sure I had an exit seat I would go with them in a hart beat. The seats all looked more comfortable and spacious than on KLM. I do not know what they fly on that route.

BA in economy: no way. Add Heathrow to the mix and the choice is easy.

Isn't SAA also a far shorter route?

Well, 16hrs or 7+12 hrs in economy... I would choose SAA. The flight is on an A340-600. Very nice plane, very nice seats, very nice IFE. Look up some of the cabin shots in the database.
They have the camera in the nose, tail and side so you can always look outside.

The flight makes a 1 hour stop in Dakar, but I don't know if you can get out.

PS: maybe this TR can help, although it is on a 747.

I just had a wonderful experience in KLM economy long-haul... LAX-AMS, which was over 10 hours. That was the 744, which isn't a particularly nice-fitted plane in their fleet. But then I turned around and did AMS-DFW in one of their 330's.... WONDERFUL airplane. I'm a Boeing guy, but that was a very nice bird.

Their 777-300 is 3-4-3, mind you, rather than the standard 3-3-3. Odd, but that's what they chose.

But I now recommend KLM to anyone who asks- very nice crew, and AMS is a great connecting airport- complete with miniature art museum.

Beware! The overwing exit AC and HK seats have an airbag in the seatbelt which is very uncomfortable. The same applies to the bulkhead seats. If you can get D or G on the overwing exit row they are better. Or there is one seat at the back (74D?) which has double legroom.



After Monday and Tuesday even the calendar says WTF...

I did not find it that uncomfortable and I am not a small person. I guess it depends on the person.

Last October I flew to SA from my home airport of IAD; the routing was IAD-LHR (using miles for a CW ticket), overnight stay, LHR to JNB (one of the last SAA 744 flights, upstairs in Y). The return was CPT-LHR on the SAA 346.

The SAA A346 is a fantastic ship. I sat in 45A (small exit door over wing), the seat with the airbag seatbelts. Great legroom, the seatbalets are a bit annoying, but not a deal-breaker. The service was okay, food okay. The SAA birds to and from LHR were 100% full.

I will probably try the SAA N/S flight from IAD to JNB next time; the equipment is the A346. they need to keep about 40 seats in Y empty for load and balance on the 15 plus hou journey.

The AMS-CPT flights are not operated with B77W equipment, nor will they be for the coming
winterseason. So B772ER is what will bring you to CPT.
