Qatar Or Finnair To HKG

I'm after some advice, I'm travelling to HKG next year and can fly on either Qatar or Finnair. Can anyone recommend either? I will be travelling in Y class. I travelled with Eithad earlier in the year and was disappointed as the foot rest were really uncomfortable as they restricted the seat pitch.

Anyway any advice comments are welcome.

Cheers

I have travelled on neither and I really only keep current on the various premium products in the industry because most airlines don't give a whole lot of information/visual depiction of the economy product. Off the bat I would say Qatar because the bar for their premium service is quite a bit higher; but, as I have heard horror stories with Y on EK, that may not be the best indicator. Good luck, fly safe, and let us know how it works out in the end.

In general my experience with AY longhaul is slightly on the negative side... not going into details.

I would go for QR... Heard many positive things about them. Big grin

New airplanes, good service, good food and nice IFE is my experience.
The only bad thing I can think about is that Doha airport is a bit boring.

New planes, yes. From the service side I heard not so good things. Unfriendly F/As, food very simple and not very delicious.
Looks like experiences can be very different...

Unfriendly F/As

Anyone ever met a friendly (Finnish) AY F/A?
I've met 1... and I think the only reason for the friendliness was that I'm a staff of an airline (maybe that is a reason not to be friendly to me, I'm always friendly to them though - IMOO?) where her husband was working as a pilot...  Wink

Off topic: By the way WILCO... Friendliest and most service minded "F/A" I ever had a on a flight was a LCAG M1F captain  Silly

On QR you can flay the A340-600 to HKG and on AY the MD-11. Both great aircrafts you can enjoy!  Smile

MD-11  cloudnine   cloudnine   yes   thumbsup   praise

On a more seirous note: I've been several times on the A340-600. Usually was sitting row 14 or further to the front. Pretty quiet in there (but maybe far away from the engines). Otherwise nothing special.
On the other hand, there aren't many MD11s left you can fly with, and I bet the A346 will be around a little longer  Wink

I think I would choose Qatar, just because of their reputation, never tried though... but AY's new long haul product isn't bad either. And probably HEL offers more comfortable transit than DOH.

In June I flew on Finnair's A340 (ICN-HEL in Y) for the first time and I was happily surprised: the new thin Recaro seat was comfortable actually, good leg room and a modern wide screen AVOD with some extra services, it was cool the send sms to friends.

A couple of shots on AY A340:
Big version: Width: 450 Height: 600 File size: 56kb
Big version: Width: 480 Height: 600 File size: 42kb
Big version: Width: 576 Height: 600 File size: 68kb

AY's meals are nothing to write home about, I am sure Qatar's better there.

Actully yes, they have been friendly most of the times lately, I think that has improved.

Maybe just maybe I will try AY again on my Australia trip this autumn... half way there (or back) that is as they do not go all the way.

My experiences mainly from the long haul flights lately, noticed the crews are younger and friendlier than they used to be, and I like they have Asian flight attendants too.

I would absolutely go with AY. If youre lucky you might catch the MD11, one of the last chances to fly one. Also, HEL is a very convenient airport for transit (as opposed to DOH), and if you get AY's A340s, I'm sure you wont be disappointed. Ive heard nothing but good things about them.

Well I have been on QR several times and I have transitted through DOH and I never had a bad expeierence. However I once had a very slow crew but it was ok.

QR is good...and i would like to fly on it one day.

Thanks for all the advise. Think i'm going to go with Finnair as the flight times are better and they don't have foot rests (my pet hate!)

Thanks Tramway

25 Tramway : Finnair has a 1hr 20min transfer time on flight from MAN - isn't this a bit close??
26 Viscount724 : AY via HEL is more than 1000 miles shorter than QR via DOH. meaning at least 2 to 3 hours less travel time. HEL is much closer to the great circle rou
27 SandroZRH : Not at all, provided your MAN-HEL doesn't experience a major delay, but AY has a very reliable shorthaul operation in my experience, so you should be
28 B747forever : Absolutely not, if I have made it through LHR in just under an hour, that will be more than enough. And I think AY is a good chose
29 Andaman : 80 min is fine, you don't even have to leave the non-Schengen terminal. Remember to write a TR
