I'm looking forward to the advice of some of the seasoned transatlantic travellers on this forum.

I'm planning a trip to Europe in May 2009, most likely to France. I'm Skyteam elite via CO Onepass and am looking at buying business class tickets. I've had fabulous experiences on transatlantic flights on CO BusinessFirst in the past, so it's hard to pass them up. Can anyone compare/contrast them with DL, AF, NW and KL? I'm particularly curious about how the seats compare, but also cabin crew and meals.

Thanks in advance for your advice.

Cannot give any advise on DL or NW, but between AF and KL, I would say: the French have better food and drinks while the Dutch have far more friendlier crews.

With regard to aircraft type: avoid the 744 and look for 330 or 777  Smile

I've flown both Air France business class from JFK to CDG on a 773 and I've flown tons of Delta 763ER business class flights from the U.S. to Europe.

There really arent that many glaring differences in the overall comfort of the biz seat. However, I will point out a few important differences: AF seats in J have a massage function which is very nice. Also, the TV screen on the AF flights are much bigger then DL's plus with AF the TV's are built into the seat back in front of you so there is no need to stow the personal monitor during landing. Again with AF, the TV doesnt interfere at all with meal service. With DL, the TV monitor kind of gets in the way of the tray, often the tray actually fits in snugly under the TV monitor which I dont really care for.

With Delta, you get really great noise cancelling headphones. AF gives you basic headphones, similar to what you might receive in coach. Delta gives you a very nice comforter and an oversize pillow. AF doesnt.

I have slept comfortably in both of DL's and AF's biz seat. However, if I had the choice to fly from the U.S. to Europe via DL or AF business class I would choose AF because of the smoothness of the T7.

As for the meal service in J, I would give the advantage to DL. It seems that the DL cabin crew work tirelessly and endlessly to please you and to make sure your happy. If your wine glass is empty they will fill up, remembering what you are drinking so you dont have to tell them. The food on DL was better then AF but not by much. I would say the overall attentiveness of the business cabin staff tilts in DL's favor.

Hope this helps. Also, I have recently compiled some trip reports on both the AF and DL business class cabins on flights I had done this year.

Thanks, MH, and Jumbojet for the info so far. Jumbojet, I've enjoyed your trip reports, too! On paper, the 18.5" wide DL BusinessElite seat sounds narrow. My partner and I are both 6'+ and broad-shouldered, so while we don't need much butt-space, we need shoulder-room (imagine the pain of sitting together on a CRJ). Are the BizElite seats really as narrow as they sound, or are they comfortable?

Also, does anyone have any comparisons to CO & NW?

My personal preference is for KL over AF, but you can go ahead and decide on your own with these two trip reports of mine detailing everything you ever wanted to know about AF and KL Business Class.

I unfortunately do not have any good NW trip reports with pictures, however I would say CO is marginally better so stick to KL or AF. However NW is always a good alternative if either KL or AF are not available if you want to try something different. Definately stay away from DL as I believe they are far from being on par with CO or even NW!

Hope this was of some help.

SR103, What didn't you like about DL that makes you feel they are below-par compared to the others?

I have to add, SR103 and Jumbojet, that both of you write some of my favorite trip reports on this site! It was fun re-reading your TR's and reviewing the pictures. I had read most of them when they originally came out, and they have been very helpful in the decision-making.

I'll be in New York before heading to France, then returning to Madison, so I will either do CO EWR-CDG, then CDG-EWR-MSN or CDG-CLE-MSN. My other easy option would be AF JFK-CDG, then DL CDG-CVG-MSN. Right now there are no codeshares on the NW flights through DTW, but I assume once the DL/NW merger goes through, that would become an option and probably my preferred connection. I love connections that keep me away from the congested airports. Air France has a late flight out of JFK that's still on an A340 (the rest are 777 and A330), which would be fun to try out for the first time, unless you think the other birds are better. Does AF still do dinner service on a flight that leaves at 9:15pm? Are they doing that abbreviated-dinner-thing on all the transatlantic flights now? That may be perfect for a late departure, then get into Paris around the time my hotel room might be available...

More than anything the seat, I am not a large fan of the seat. I have also had much better luck with service on NW than DL. I tend to find DL's food to be very lackluster and rather tasteless at times, CO does a much better job in this department. I have just never really had a pleasurable experience on DL, but I still fly them quite a bit domestically when I have no choice. Internationally I would rather switch alliances than pay or use miles for DL. Sorry, just my rather (biased) opinion.

A340 is almost identical to the A330, so I say you'll be fine either way.

If you check out my other AF trip report, I flew a 6pm JFK-CDG flight and they had what I considered a scale down two tray dinner service. It could easily be something like that.
