I flew with them June 2007 from JFK-MNL via TPE and ANC. I found the service to be okay, I thought it was funny though when I asked for playing cards I got a can of coke instead somehow, depending if you get on board their newer 744 you may have a PTV or not. I know they were retrofitting their olds one with PTV though.

I fly them every year (except this year). No PTVs on the older 744s, but the beautiful and kind FAs make up for everything. :3

Quoting Anonms (Reply 3): the beautiful and kind FAs make up for everything.
Ding ding ding!
I fly them about once a month, and compared to airlines from the states, CI's service is better by leaps and bounds, and the FAs are simply gorgeous. Also, I've always had PTVs (in both A330s and 747s) every time, but that's not to say they all have 'em. I'm flying them tomorrow to HK, can't wait!

i used to fly them from jfk-tpe and the 744's were really comfortable. i remember they even have like a self-service area near the lavs with juice water and crackers. but after they switched to the a340's i started flying jal eventhough the jfk-tpe service is back to 744 service

I have been flying China Airlines every year since 2000 and I have never had an issue on them. flown in both economy and Dynasty class.
I frequently fly the LAX-TPE-BKK and SFO-TPE-BKK sectors, have previously taken the TPE-HKG and TPE-HKG-BKK sectors and JFK-ANC-TPE and TPE-JFK as well.
Flown on the 737-800, 747-400 (both PW and GE), 744 Dreamliner, A300, A330, A340, and MD-11.
I miss the China Airlines MD-11 and once in a while a swap of the Mandarin MD-11
The only trend I have seen change in coach from the old days, the menu in Y class is gone, it now posts a menu on the screen inflight for information when meals are about to be served.
The meals are alright (meat has lots of fat still on it) When I flew revenue once in a while, Id order a Hindu meal it looked fancier to me in Y Class and had paneer in it.
but I often fly non-rev and I prefer taking MH home on the TPE-LAX sector since the food is better and seats a bit more comfortable.
the newer 744s and the refurbished cabins have the seats that were introduced in Y class on the A340 order. I prefer the older non-IFE seats from the 744, they felt better for my back and had a sturdy headrest (not the old old one that is often used on that old 744 to AMS, that one was gross)
You will find CI to be a good especially they often had good deals to SE Asia and you get more for your money.
Have a good trip.
I use to use my Dynasty miles for upgrades to Dynasty class for Trans-Pacific segments in the past. It was well worth the upgrade several times, but I cant accrue as a non-rev though. And included a lounge pass in TPE (unlimited dimsum)

There Are Those Who Believe That There May Yet Be Other Airlines Who Even Now Fight To Survive Beyond The Heavens

I flew China Airlines return BKK - HKG in 2002. Bargain price (but they had recently lost a 747 on the route). We sat upstairs on the outward leg, there can't have been more than 10 people on the 747! Was a fantastic experience, great service. (it wasn't until later that we heard about the crash).

The 74A is mainly used on the route TPE-BKK-AMS, but the oldest two are already gone, so you won't get the gross 74A for sure. The 74B might be used on the route on Mon. and Wed. departures from TPE as there are no flights to FRA on those two dates. However, it may be substituted to the TPE-SFO route as well.
Their services can't fault you for sure... you can take a look at my flight reports or any other people on this forum, pretty sure they are positive on the services. Flight attendants are miles ahead of the states, and they are beautiful

I am pretty sure the "everything" he meant does not include a non-complimentary "crash" since no one wants it. The everything used here should be talking about the services that you are opt to have such as check-in, lounge, meals, drinks, and etc.
If safety history is a concern, don't take their flight, it's the same as how prices have an impact on how people choose their airlines, depends on what you value. There are still some airlines flying the AMS-BKK route that has zero casualties.
