To Check Or Not To Check, That Is The Question

Friday I am flying on AA from ORD to FLL. This is my first flight on AA since they started the fees for checked bags. How has that been going? Are more people carrying on bags now and fighting for the overhead space? I am kind of considering checking my bag and paying the fee so that I do not have to fight for overhead space. Since this is a Friday flight to FLL, I am going to guess that it will be full, which will be another reason why I might check my bag. Any seasoned travelers on AA have any ideas on this?

don't check it cause if you can't get it in a bin I believe, correct me if I am wrong, if you are required to gate check it you will not be charged

Several times when flying on a full MD-80, I have had to put my suitcase under the seat in front of me because there was not room in the overhead. This greatly reduces the amount of legroom and makes it hard to retrieve things in flight.

Have you ever flown on a AA MD-80? they have extended bins on aircraft right. (3 seat side) You can easily put a standard size rollerboard in there.

The fuselage on an MD-80 is only 131.6 inches wide and the interior height is 81 inches. On the 737, the fuselage is 148 inches wide and the interior height is 84 inches. The bins on the MD-80 are not big as the other two planes both in depth and the height of the interior. In addition, the curvature of the fuselage is tighter which obstructs the space.

One of the reasons I am flying American less and less lately is that I am tired of cramming myself into an MD-80. American needs to get rid of all of them.

As an aside, I was 55lbs and annoyed on Southwest and Delta that both required me to take out 5lbs and place this in hand baggage! I know a rule is a rule, but in the end what's the difference if it's in hand baggage or checked? It meant taking overhead bin space away from others!

i am not sure but i think if you had an international combined with domestic itinerary, they wouldn't charge you to check a bag. if any one can confirm this , it would be great.

on the other hand, i experienced on an combined international / domestic itinerary a waive of over bag charge. i had a full fare business class ticket, the business class segment was IAD - FRA - DXB, however, on the PHX-IAD that had a 5 days stop over before continuiing to Dubai, my bag was 57LBS, and they haven't charged me, the agents said that i had an international business class segment on the same ticket, so it was waived.

I would not check it just for a principle.
Simply to contribute to prove that this business model is wrong, all those nickel and dime measures to fight oil price are just short sighted.
I know that actually it's likelly to be me to be wrong, but I would say:
oil price goes up -> increase the fares by 10-20 bucks !!! always keep your service standards high, give treats to your customers and even if they had to pay 10 USD more for the fare they'll come back!!! (I know purchase is emotional, based on a single # at the end of the page, so what I'm saying may simply not work).
RANT MODE OFF

No actually I won't check it for another reason:
1) if you're not a FF try to board early (internet check in a couple of days before flight). Chances are that you will have room for your bag.
2) even if there's no room for you're bag you'll be asked to leave it to the ramp personnel for an on board delivery.
3) You won't have to wait for your luggage if you don't check it in.

If your carry-on is small & light enough to make it legally onboard, why not give it a try. Demonstrate it to the airlines that this new model simply does not work, as there is not enough overhead-bin space if the flight is near full.

I agree with others here, that a flat rate fee for one piece of luggage to check in order to compensate rising fuel costs is not the right solution, while on the other hand, airlines allow 10 kg and more to be hauled onboard for free.
OTOH, on full flights, the search for remaining overhead storage space is an annoying thing which, based on my experience, can lead to delays in departure, so it is a two-side blade if oneself contributes to this problem (personally I prefer to travel light and check anything (which has been free for me sofar) but a small shoulder bag that fist underneath the seat in front of me).

As a pax, I would prefer if the airlines actually would enforce set limitations on the amount of carry-on (for passengers in Coach, as the problem only shelves there).


Based on "pieces" of luggage, a flat fee could be "sold" as a handling fee (the way FR does in Europe) rather than a ocmpansation for fuel costs.
The differences in weight a single piece of luggage brings to the total load of an aircraft often is outshadowed by the variance in single passengers body weight, but still a skinny model of 45 kg is paying the same fare as a 150kg+ fatso, as long as they occupy only a single seat - but changing the fare structure in this respect is a no-no, I guess.
(Btw, this would be a bad fare structure for me, being considerably overweight myself ...)

My recent AA's in the last few weeks - MCI-DFW-LAX and back. MCI-DFW-HNL-ORD-MCI.

My observations - yes - more carry-ons. Was in FC on all these -- so witnessed first hand FA's and Gate Agents dealing with forced gate checks on almost every flight. And some pissed off paxs. Observed gate agents really being strict about limits also. Of course, height of vacation session - so every flight full. Here's a scene we saw repeated often --- Family, obviously on vacation -- Dad, Mom - 2-3 kiddos. Everyone of them has a roller bag or some kind of carry on -- heading down the aisle. We saw several little kids struggling with their carry-ons, that Mom and Dad had assigned them. Understandable, a family of 5 could rack up a sizable bag check fee pretty quick.
