When You Hope To Get On Certain Aircraft…

In the past month or so I have flown NM three times: GLO-JER, BHD-IOM, and IOM-LBA. (The second and third were flown yesterday.) I had selected those routes to hopefully fly the SWM, D28, and L4T – each rare in Europe. All three flights ended up being aboard the SWM, and while I like the aircraft it was somewhat disappointing (although I still very much enjoyed the flights). But there you go.  Smile (It seems that the L4T often flies IOM-BLK-IOM, so I might see about getting a £15 one-way tax-inclusive deal - the same price I paid for BHD-IOM -sometime.)

Has something memorable like that happened to you? If so, which aircraft were you hoping to fly but what did you end up flying?

Yeah, my flight to LBA was scheduled at 1640 as was the flight to BLK - and that was by the L4T.

The flight before mine from BHD-IOM was by the L4T.

SWM, D28, and L4T

Just to clarify:

I had hoped to get the D28 on GLO-JER, the L4T on BHD-IOM, and the SWM on IOM-LBA.

I tried to get on a SK AR7 a few days ago but ended up on a OS F70 as the SK flight was full. Big grin

At least I got my DH1 from HOV to OSL on WF ( both first timers.)

Of course as airplane hunter it happened more then once
On 2 March 1993 I was to get on an early trial flight with the new A-340 of Lufthansa from ATH-FRA. (Not planned but when checking in the staff told me). Later that day it went tech and I got on the original scheduled A-300 instead.
In 1999 I especially picked a certain DEN-SFO flight to get on an United DC-10 only to see a 757 at the gate.
In 2001 I spend lots of efforts to go to Cancun and Cozumel for the FH-227 but just that week it was substituted by two J-31s.
In 2004 I especially picked a certain LHR-GLA flight to get a BD F-100 only to get on yet another A-321
In 2005 I wanted to fly Bern-LCY on a Darwin S2000 but Bern was inundated so we were bused to a Swiss ARJ from ZRH.
On the other hand I got some nice substitutes as well, like planning to fly IS 757 (which I already done on the way out) and gotten tranferred to a RJ Tristar instead in 1995.

I had planned btw to get on a AI B743Combi in October but now they changed it to a 744. Very sad.  Smile

Yeap, partly just this week in fact. Back in March I'd tried to take a flight on Skybus' TwinOtter, but they subbed an Islander on the flight instead, then I booked a NQY-SBK flight which is only operated by the Twotter, and it got canx on Monday due to weather, and then finally on Tuesday I went back and got on it - third time lucky!

It also took me three attempts to fly a KL F100, due to two going tech - the second time I even got into it and we pushed back, but as the engines fired up the cabin filled with smoke and fumes, so we were promptly towed back in again. I missed the Tu134 twice as well, first time I was on a quick trip and had no idea Syrian Air were still flying it, and only found out when I saw it boarding at DAM, and second time I hoped to fly it from GYD, but due to passenger numbers an ImAir Tu154 was leased for the summer season instead  grumpy  Third time lucky on that one too I hope!

Uhh, well, on my trip to Bermuda, the original itinerary said it was going to be a 757 for some reason, but, like like usual, it was a 738 without winglets or PTVs or any of that other stuff.  Angry

When I booked my flights to PER for the Redbull Air Race on the way down I choose QF505 BNE-SYD on a 763 connect to QF581 SYD-PER to get a QF 743 one last time a few weeks ago the 743 flight changed to a 763 also. If i wanted a 763 I could have just flown QF nonstop BNE-PER. I was going to change my reservation to either the 734/332 combo via SYD or a 763 nonstop but because QF are now running specials to PER and I would of had to change my reservation to a higher booking class it was going to cost nearly the same as a new reservation to change the flights so I'm just going to leave it.

Back in '05, I was planning on non-revving on United MCI-DEN-IAD-PIT. Why the odd route? That DEN-IAD flight was a 777-200. Not to mention that MCI-DEN and IAD-PIT would've added some new types to my log as well, and another flight connecting the hubs was a 763. Well, departure date creeped up, and so did the reservations. The night before departure, it was oversold, so I would've had to fly MCI-DEN-ORD if I wanted some heavies, then non-rev on Independence Air ORD-IAD-PIT.

That was the first time I flew on Southwest and the 737-300 and 737-700, and my first revenue flight.

The first "incident" that comes to mind was back in the late 80s or early 90s. Being on holiday in Romania i was lucky enough to get the TAROM Tu154 on my flight down there. Of course i was really looking forward to the flight back throughout my entire stay (not that Romania was a bad place  Smile ). I guess you can imagine my disappointment when the bus taking us out to the plane stopped in front of a 737  cry .

Another one was earlier this summer. Flying from ARN to OSL. I was hoping to catch the FlyNordic (now Norwegian.se) MD80s before they are being retired. But of course it was a B738 that rolled up to the gate  Sad

Hopefully nothing like this will happen on my upcoming trip to Russia, where i hope to catch both the TU134 and the IL86.

Any plans? I have a feeling that is another plane we are running out of time if we are going to catch it.

Unfortunately not, I spent faaaar too much on my last trip, so I'm just working to pay off the C.Card bill, and then I can think about my next trip in a few months time  yes . Probably will be Russia though, FR to somewhere in Eastern Europe and then a train to Moscow, I really want to do more overland travel as well as flying!

Fingers crossed for you on that Il-86, and the 134 Big grin

My "worst" disappointment was in 1992, when we flew HAM-LHR-SFO-KOA-HNL-LAX-JFK-LHR-HAM, all on UA. The LHR-SFO leg was scheduled on a B747SP, but we ended up with a B747-200. I guess that was my only and last chance to fly on a B747SP - sadly a missed opportunity.

Cheers

About 18 months I booked a certain ATL-LAS flight on DL so I could finally fly on a 767-400ER. About a month after I booked, the flight I had booked was downgraded to a 767-300 (Been there done that) so I change flights because I noticed that there was a 764 that left later on in the morning. I change my booking to that flight (as well as move my return to the 764 flight as well) and managed to get one of the best seats in the First Class section of the 764ER for both legs of the flight (I was treating myself to a trip up front for once.).

Comes the day of the flight, nothing has changed in terms of equipment. Gets time to board, and while in line to board I happen to look up at the monitor that shows upgrades and cleared standby pax and notice that the seat number I had on my boarding pass was now assigned to someone else. I was a bit intrigued, and when they scanned my boarding I had a new seat assignment. I was peeved to say the least, as I thought I had lost my really sweet seat and was a bit angry as the gate agents never bothered to page me about my new seat assignment and I had been in the gate area for at least 30 minutes prior to boarding. The anger subsided the moment I entered the First Class cabin. Turns out the 764ER assigned to the flight had just been converted for international service so the cabin was in the BusinessElite set up with the new IFE system (minus the live TV) and everyone up front had new seat assignments as a result.

For the flight home, I was hoping I'd get lucky and the 764ER for that flight would be one of the ones in the BusinessElite layout but wasn't so lucky. I had my really sweet seat with the extra legroom, but the IFE system was a bit worn out.

Sounds nice. Wish i could get a trip on the Trans-Siberian railway now, but limited time and the chance to get some new (and rare) Soviet planes in my "book" prevented this on this occasion.

Thanks! It seems more likely that i will get the 134 now. I just checked my flights and it seems my flight from LED to VKO is changed back to a 134 (they changed it to a 154 earlier). Unfortunately that means i don't get the 154 on this trip, as my flight from SVO to PEE also is changed from a 154 to a B735  Angry . Still showed the IL86 on my flight from SVX to SVO though  cloudnine

I was scheduled to fly a UA DC-8 from SFO to LAX and it was replaced with a 727-200.
Never did get on a DC-8 and probably never will.
