AF 343 Or KLM 747?

I'm planning a trip to Paris next month using some FF miles with Skyteam. I'll be flying coach. The route back to the States gives me two options -- AF-343 CDG-JFK (then delta to California) or KLM 747 AMS to LAX. I'll be flying AF 330 to Europe.

I've never flown a 340 (or a 330), and I've not flown KLM. I'd like to try the 340. I've flown the 744 many times, but I feel they will soon be history. Which would you choose and why?

Could see if you could fly to PAR with AF and from PAR via AMS with KL, or vice-versa. See how much that'd be mile-wise? Don't know if feasible in this instance.

Do you really want to endure another transcon JFK - SAN after having flown TATL ?
While the A343 might be the nicer a/c to fly in coach with its 8-abreast seating, the connection CDG-AMS-LAX should get you home quicker and with less hassle (even in followed by a drive from LAX to SAN).

Personally, I have stronger ties with the Dutch and their type of customer service than with the French. This includes F/A's.

OTOH, flying through AMS usually calls for higher airport fees to be paid for Award flights compared to CDG. However, the extra transfer at JFK might counterbalance this.

If timings are okay with you, I would go for the KL-flight back - that way you would sample two different airlines during one trip ...

AF 343 in coach is not too good. That is to say there are no good seats. With KLM you have more chance of an exit seat although they cost E50,-.

KL 747 has no PTVs. Cant remember if the 343 had them. (I always bring my own)

KL cabin crew are the nicest (and cutest) in the world.

Last but not least: transfer at JFK is not for the fainthearted...

No prices for guessing my choice would be KLM.

Exactly, they will soon be history. Enjoy it while it is still flying. plus you don't want to connect at JFK and fly 5+ hours to CA in a domestic flight!! I'd rather enjoy the 11 hours non-stop flight and enjoy the 744.

True, their staff is great. but the seat pitch in their 744 is something I would have avoided...not that I'm that keen on AF either.

You want me to be honest? I prefer an airline with a better seat pitch than seating in an exit. I actually prefer having another row in front of me, and not seat at the exit (or bulkhead). maybe it's just me - but I hate those seats. their uncomfortable, I feel like slipping out of my seat if reclining as there's nothing to rest my legs on, it's too cold there and people stand over you all the time since you are just in front of the lavatories. so no thank you, I wouldn't take this seat for free - let alone pay for it.

maybe too late now, but if I were you I'd probably go with AF.... their 343 is a nice product, PTVs at every seat and a very quiet ride... if you're lucky you can even get a seat in front of the wing in Y

the KL 744s have only a big screen and some audio channels as IFE, and, opposed to other people in this thread, I always found the AF F/As far nicer than the KL ones...
