Looking For Great Suggestions For Ex JFK Trip

Ok. I will admit it. I am impulsive. Very impulsive even. So when I saw a return on OpenSkies from AMS to JFK for €1013,- (Prem+ in and Biz return) I took it. More or less without thinking. After all: who can resist a long weekend New York? I fly in on October 31st and return on November 3rd.

Well, it turns out that this weekend the city of New York is either full or it has a ‘squeeze more money out of tourists’ promotion. I cannot find a descent hotel room under $450,-. Besides, I refuse to pay $549,- for a room I normally rent at $299.-. I don’t know about you, but that does not work well with me.

So now for my question. I need a suggestion for a weekend break!

I want to fly straight on from New York to another destination and I am looking for some more ‘out of the ordinary’ destinations. I arrive at T7 around 16:30 and return from T7 around 20:00 and I want easy transits. I fly preferably on a OneWorld or Skyteam airline. I like Marriott and Hyatt but am open to all kinds of interesting alternatives. Wooden cabins in the forest, lake view cottages, cave dwellings, luxury resorts in strange places...

So what great tips do you have? Where are the hidden gems? Where should I go? All given that I know the States pretty well. I lived in Boston, Washington D.C. and New York and frequent California and ‘certain parts of Nevada'...

Have you looked for hotels in Jersey City or New Jersey?

There is a Hyatt right above the PATH station that takes you to Lower Manhattan (WTC stop) very easily and you can often get rooms for less than $200/night.

If you can find a ferry that goes to your part of NJ then you can enjoy the trip back and forth across the Hudson too.

Outside Manhattan?? You must be kidding right?

I'll have a look...

EDIT: That one is $399,- per night too that weekend. So that nails it: New York is out that weekend.  Smile

Have you ever been to rural New England? It's not the most lively part of the country but the landscape is very beautiful. And it's only a hop away from NY.

Thanks for the suggestion AirCatalonia. I lived in Boston for a while with the use of a friends house in Newport. So yes, I have. Great idea however. I loved it there. Not sure if I would do any of it in October/November.

Oh wow, the world is so small. I actually spent part of my summer volunteering in a community project there in Newport, NH (that's how I came to know New England). The place is beautiful and the people is very welcoming (I guess that must be a small-town thing...). I had the chance to meet many people from the local community. So if your friends live there they will probably have heard about the "internationals" who come every year to teach kids at the high-school.

As for the weather, I imagine it's not specially warm and sunny up there in November. Perhaps you should head for the south if you prefer sun but I don't know much about that area, just the widely-known Las Vegas, Los Angeles and San Francisco.

I think Florida could be a winner. I am thinking the Florida Keys however or Miami Beach.

I will wait till the last moment because we will still be in Hurricane season and also the weather is notoriously unpredictable.

Alternatively I have the option to fly to LAX (8:35pm) and drive via Palm Springs to Phoenix. There are some very nice hotels in both cities. Return from PHX via SLC... This will be more of an undertaking but Joshua Tree National Park and the drive from PSP to PHX seem worth it.

Any experiences you wish to share? Any hotel suggestions for either destination?

I can help you get the lowest fare if you would like (In turn for an OpenSkies Safety Card)

If you like the keys then you must connect .

If you like Miami you can fly direct (if you fly AA you would have internet)

You mean you can beat JFK-MIA return on AA for $204?  Wink

I plan to stay in MIA on the 31st and drive to the Keys the next morning so no need to fly to Key West.

I will try and score you a safety card nevertheless.

Joshua Tree National Park

I went there about 2 years ago during a vacation staying in Indio for a while.
Taking into account that I am not a hiker, it kept me busy for less than a half day. One lookout and one impressive field of cactus (what's the plural of this ?), but nothing to compare to other NP's IMO.

Quoting Henkybaby (Reply 8):

The drive in I-10 is boring with a capital "B" (keep in mind, that I prefer to use standard highways over Interstates in most areas of the U.S. as these get you closer to many views & the landscape).
Although being a detour, I would recommend to take a southern route via Salton Sean and Yuma, then I-8. Depending on time and location in Phoenix to head for, either use AZ-85 from Gila Bend Northbound or US-84/AZ-347 via Maricopa (watch for speed traps in the Ak Chin reservation).

I looked into downtwn hotels at Palm Springs back then but found these (in my favoured price range) to be of lesser quality than those in the outskirts. I stayed at the Holiday Inn Express Indio - good property, but noise from engine-breaking trucks on sloping I-10 was no fun (but maybe it was just me). Easy access to the Interstate and not too far from shopping (for food).Palm Springs only a short drive away. I would consider staying there again, but only if the price is okay.

I dont know about the flights, but if your a Boeing fan Seattle might be a great thing. Real nice city too. If you want nature, you might wanna try Denver, or maybe even SLC but depends on how much time you can spent when there.

Nothing's worse then flying the same registration twice, except flying it 4 times..

Dont do that option. Area by JFK hotels is pretty terrible with nothing to do, nowhere to eat. Getting into NYC would take a while, involving at least 3 trains or a super expensive taxi.

In New York I now hold a reservation at the Marriott Courtyard Jersey City Newport for $219 including taxes. I am still tempted to either fly on to LAS or MIA and just lay in the sun... So I also hold a reservation at the South Beach Marriott at the same rate.... Choices...

Alternatively I could cancel the ticket and chalk the EUR 100,- cancellation fee up to experience... But when else can you fly Prem+ (AMS-JFK) and Biz return for 'only' E1063?

Thanks for all the suggestions. I however decided to cancel. Saves me over E1500,- and frankly that seemed a bit much for a impulse weekend.  no

If I could have stayed in NYC for a reasonable price in a reasonable hotel I would have. Paying $600 per night for the Marriott, $220 for a NJ hotel or flying to MIA is just too much trouble... I rather spend it on my world trip starting December 13th...

Still a bit sad though. Would have loved to fly OpenSkies...

Thanks again!
