Hello All,
This is my first post here. I just joined A.net tonight, but I've been reading the posts and looking at the pictures for years. I have a question I hope someone can help me out with. I'm looking to going to Germany for spring break this year with my girlfriend, and I was wondering if anyone had any advice searching for flights. The dates I'm looking for are: depart 14 March, return 21 March 2009. The dates are somewhat flexible, but I'd like to spend about a week there. What's the best way to go about looking for flights and/or airlines? I looked up studentuniverse.com, sidestep.com and others, but I'm hoping to find something cheaper. If anyone has any advice/input please let me know. I've looked into different destinations, such as AMS, BRU, FRA, MUC, and such. My final destination is Bonn, as my aunt lives there, so I can take the train from any of these airports.

I searched the forums quite a bit but couldn't find anything that related to this much. If there is something like this, mods, feel free to delete. Any advice or input would help me out. Thanks! Please be kind, it's my first post!

With Bonn being your final destination, you might try your luck choosing a destination that is not a hub, as such flights sometimes are cheaper.
Look into flying to DUS or CGN. AF/KL often undercuts LH's fares.
OTOH, LH flies nonstop between ORD and DUS - and it's a short train ride from there to Bonn.

Additionally, flying longhaul out of ORD often means higher fares.
Check fares out of MDW (especially on NW/KL via DTW) or if you are that flexible, some places even further away.

EDIT: When looking into trip costs, do not forget to factor-in the potential train ride in Germany.

Thanks for the help! I appreciate it. I actually just found a flight from IND-FRA for $753. I am not going to book anything immediately, as I still have to confer mit meine Tante about going to visit her. Thanks for the replies, because this opened up options for me and I have more ideas now.
p.s. I think my aunt would take a train to the airport where we come in and meet us there, and probably pay for out train ticket haha. (wishful thinking maybe).

Edit: I'm a student at Purdue, so IND is closer to me, but I can get to MDW, or ORD.

Air India is an awesome airline on this perticular route they use a 77W (777-200) and the entertainment is nice too (Really Nice PTVs) and the food, where do I even begin ! Also the flight comes with the really nice Indian hospitality ! Bring Me Back A Safety Card !

I agree which is why I like your idea of using DUS or CGN.

Unless you really have your heart set on taking a train and seeing some scenery, it could very well be somewhat cheaper in looking at a connecting flight to a closer airport such as DUS or CGN which are only a short train trip from Bonn as HT pointed out.

If you book with LH to CGN or DUS, there are a few iteneries that put you on the ICE3 train from FRA to CGN and DUS instead of the usually B737 or A320 if you are interested in that.

On several occasions I've checked in the past (not on those dates you mentioned, mind you) the cheapest fare was always with US. then again, I'd personally rather swim to Germany...

If you can book the AI flight (I didn't know they fly ORD-FRA... nice to see that one) I would definitely take that. a short train ride to Bonn from FRA airport terminal is the best way to get there - no point in additional flight to CGN (in fact, I'm not even sure LH still operate this route. it was a great short hop to CGN though).
speaking of the train: some airlines offer complimentary or reduced inner-german fares with a flight+train combined ticket. worth checking if AI offers that as well.

I don't believe there any more flights with LH from FRA-CGN they are all operated by the ICE3 now. However, they are still given a LH flight number and ticket if you book as a connecting "flight" through LH. Booking it through LH as a connecting flight is usually cheaper then buying the ticket separately. Even though you can get from point A to point B fairly cheaply with Deutsche Bahn, this usually involves taking numerous trains and stopping off at almost every train station possible adding a lot of time to the journey. Personally, thats the last thing I want to do after a Trans Atlantic flight and with all my baggage.

Also, I took the ICE3 from FRA to DUS this past February because my connecting flight to DUS got cancelled twice. As quick and nice as it was, I still would prefer to fly simply because it still is somewhat quicker (if you're connecting) and is much more comfortable as it the airplane is less crowded.

Another thing one may want to factor in, is that if you're a first timer in Germany. It can be very easy to get off at the wrong train station especially if you're taking the S-Bahn or Regional Bahn.

Thanks again for all the input you guys are giving. It's not my first time, I speak German enough to get by. I found a flight on some website that has a flight from SAS for $602 from ORD-FRA. I spoke with my Aunt this afternoon and she said there are no more flights from FRA-CGN. She said there weren't enough people flying them. I'll look into the prices of the ICE-3 and how much it would be just to use that with a connection from LH.

That was interesting about AI flying from ORD, however I couldn't find how to book a flight just to FRA from ORD, it would only let me choose Tel Aviv as the destination. Thanks again and I'm narrowing it down.

p.s. Have any of you flown SAS? I haven't heard much about it and never flown it myself. Thanks

a flight from SAS for $602 from ORD-FRA.

If this flight is on SK-metal you will have to connect at either CPH or ARN, thus adding overall travel time.
If it is shown as a nonstop, it likely is UA-metal with the chance to be LH-metal. Check the SK-flight number carefully and look for it on amadeus.net if necessary.

Quoting FlybaurLAX (Reply 10):
Have any of you flown SAS?

Shorthaul, international in Europe: basic service with Buy-on-Board service. If connecting through CPH, stock your supplies of food / drinks in the bookshop at CPH or the Delicatessen across from it. Do not worry about local currency (DKK); simply swipe your Credit Card (or use the chip on it).

Longhaul: It's been a while for me, but back then it was a solid service in scandinavian style - something that very well suited me.

Quoting FlybaurLAX (Reply 10):

Correct. But be aware that LH does not codeshare on every train from FRA to CGN ! There are gaps of up to 3 hours. Have a look into LH's timetable.
However, if you purchase the train ticket seperately (likle more expensive, though), this is of no concern for you. If purchasing the train ticket seperately, you might want to go to Bonn Hbf (Central station) instead of Köln-Bonn airport ?! Those direct trains take a bit longer, but you will go along the River Rhine valley. If you are looking into using the ICE3 instead you will have to select either CGN or Köln Hauptbahnhof as destination.

Coming back to promoting DUS (especially the nonstop between ORD and DUS on LH):
Direct trains take 1 hour from DUS to Bonn Hbf with 13.80 EUR being the current fare (21.50 EUR First Class, which might be a good option if you have lots of luggage).
Check train times and fares on http://www.bahn.de/international/view/en/index.shtml

Some trains were also operated with LH code number as well when there were flights. but I preferred the flight of course - used it a couple of times to get to (the very sweet airport) CGN, and it was very comfortable. not that the trains in Germany are half bad...

Check again. I've got a price right now for the exact dates you wanted from the AI site for $672 - even cheaper than what Bbinn found. I think it's much better to pay the $70 extra and save yourself a longer journey with a connection in Scandinavia.

About the train: if you anyway have to go to Bonn and not Duesseldorf, and therefor will in any case have to use the train, I'm not sure if it's worth paying a higher fare with LH to DUS ($760), although it's also an option. I would suggest the AI to FRA, and a train from the terminal to Bonn HBF - would be around an hour an a half, starting at 29 euros (and on a side note - if you ask me, I'd rather do that if only to avoid the monorail skytrain leading from DUS terminal to the airport train station.... brrrrrr).

True, trains with LH numbers have been running since the 1980s. I'm not 100% sure of this, but I would assume the last actual LH flight between FRA and CGN wasn't too long after DB opened up the new ICE3 stretch between FRA and Koln Hbf.

Whats wrong with the SkyTrain?  Smile I love it, when its working that is ... lol! Besides, once at the Flughafen Bahnhof, might as well get some fantastic spotting in on the observation deck ... Big grin

Alternatively, you can still take the S-Bahn from the DUS terminal itself and it takes you to the DUS Hbf.

I always use Sidestep.com and then see what comes up. Remember US Airlines guarantee the lowest fare available at their website.
