Like the 757 and L1011, I find the MD-11 a blast to look at.

I'm looking for some insight as to what I should expect comfort, convenience and safety wise if I choose to fly it from Canada to Amsterdam this winter. In addition, I was browsing through seat guru and saw something interesting: Why are the galleys set up the way they are?

http://www.seatguru.com/airlines/KLM/KLM_MD-11.php

It looks ergonomically flawed for both passengers and F/A's. It looks like either the flight attendants must walk from the rear to 3/4's the way up the airplane to serve coach customers or first class customers must deal with flight attendants bringing carts through their cabin into coach.

How is the first/business product? Are the noise levels acceptable? This aircraft just looks so appealing exterior wise, I hope it fits the bill inside. Thanks.

I posted a MD-11 trip report back in December.

I think this is a leftover from the time KL still had a first class. That would have been situated in the front, with business behind the number 2 doors. By the time first class got dropped it was too late to change the galley layout.

Had the pleasure of sitting in row 1 on a KLM MD-11 last February from JFK-AMS.

Was a very comfortable ride. The service was wonderful. I would jump at the chance to do that again.

There's basically no point to asking anything about any modern commercial aircraft "safetywise" operated by any major flag carrier outside Russia or certain African republics.

I absolutely love the MD-11/DC-10s

Flew KLM MD-11 and NWA DC-10 on several occasions on transcontinental flights and it was THE best experience each time.

I was in DEL in July and saw a Finair MD-11 landing. Are they still flying those babies?

They sure are, but the day is close when they will dissappear from the skies.

Wonderfully detailed report! I'm sold. I'm a fan of the color scheme as well. The blue KLM uses does wonders for the exterior of the MD-11.

Many carriers who initially operated the MD-11 would probably disagree with you on that one. I think the question is a valid one, especially when talking about some older airplanes that are still operating regularly among major carriers. Of course most of us are well versed on safety rules and regulations. I rarely fly KLM or any other international carrier. I'm sure they are just fine but someone may have an interesting tidbit to offer to the conversation.

Well the MD-11 has been a maintenance drama for KLM for several years now, which will probably hasten its phase-out (in 2013 was it not?), as it has left quite a bit of flights being delayed or even cancelled.

So yes, I do think it is quite a valid question, though, don't get me wrong, the MD-11 is a very safe and modern airliner. My personal favourite in fact.  Wink

She is and will always remain a beauty, if not the most beautiful.  Smile

Grab that chance to fly the MD-11 before she's gone for good.

I remember a few years back, when KL replaced the MD11 used to serve the TLV route with a 739, a friend of mine, who was sent by his work all over and was flying a lot, was extremely bummed about it. I tried convincing him to try LH and LX C instead, but he said it just wasn't the same and nothing compared to KL C class on the MD11. I didn't understand him back then and to be honest, not having flown one yet I still don't - but apparently, and I'm quite surprised to see it's such a consensus, he's not the only one... now I'm more than curious to give it a try myself!
so, which routes are still served by the KL MD11? and which of AY? and a bonus question: which one is your favourite?  Wink

safety wise

The safety rate is excellent today, but it was not in the first few years, where the MD11 DID have accidents, some of them fatal (SR 111 was not the only one).

These times have passed, and the MD 11 has proven to be a reliable, safe plane. The safety rate might not be quite as good as it is on comparable planes like the A340 and 777, but it is better than its predecessor DC-10, and nothing to worry about.

I will miss those days, I doubt I will never fly on an MD-11 again by a long shot.

Loved the services on

China Airlines and Mandarin MD-11

I flew DL MD-11 several times, but never tried the Y section, always flew Business Elite  Smile

Yes, that's the reason. First class service required more galley space. Had KL dropped F class before the MD-11s arrived I'm sure the galley layout would have been quite different. KL also reduced the number of business class seats a year or so ago since they now mainly use the MD-11s on routes with heavy leisure and lower business demand.

The economy class galley on KL's MD-11s is at the extreme rear of the cabin. It shows up better on the seatmap in the KL website.

The Old Madge is a beautiful plane but I won't be missing the flying experience in an old Y-class.

I did Business Class Ams to Aruba on MD11, had seat 1G, lots of space, very quiet plane and great service, only complaint was that the seat was not a flat bed type, other than that, great.

I found late Swiss MD-11 to be more comfortable then sister A340-300. However MD-11 doesn't have PTV's which make A343 better on 11 hours journey.
