Itinerary Change Due To A Cancelled Flight?

Just wondering why my return itinerary from Singapore March 7 was changed from United 882 Tokyo to Chicago , to United 896 Singapore to Chicago, stopping in Hong Kong? My original flight Singapore to Tokyo (UA 804) has most of its seats empty, so I'm wondering why they changed my return itinerary? Is it because Flight 882 , a 747-400 (Tokyo to Chicago) was cancelled? No one I spoke to at United reservations had any answer. I'm cool with the change, just curious why I couldn't fly UA 882 home from Tokyo?
