Hello,

I'm flying the above route in October and need to choose between UA and AA. I'd be grateful of opinions in helping me make the decision.

I'm also considering getting the day flight from ORD-LHR on the return leg. What's the general opinion of day flight v night flight on the west-east crossing of the Atlantic?

Regards

is it Y or J?

If its Y then go AA. They have loads of Legroom and good service. Nothing wrong with a 777  Smile/happy/getting dizzy

Thanks for the reply Cragley.

It's in Y class. I've traveled US Airways many times before via CLT, PIT or PHL and found them to be generally pretty good. However, last time I flew with them the plane went tech in Charlotte and we were delayed 24hrs before coming back across the Atlantic. I therefore decided it was time to give one of the other guys a try.

Not flown AA, but I have always been very very impressed with UA. I like their service and food and think that their seat comfort is excellent, although I am aware that the seat pitch is less on UA. You also have Channel 9 - a UA exclusive!  Big grin

I did a day flight from IAD-LHR (not by choice) by I have to say it was the best eastbound flight I have ever had. I had zero jetlag the following day. Bloomin' marvelous!  Smile

If you are buying a Y, B, or M ticket or have Star Alliance status, go with UA as you can then have Economy Plus and they generally have superior service. Otherwise, go with AA for MRTC.

I'd also recommend UA over AA because UA has far superior facilities at ORD.

Neither. Go with BA or AI. You'll get 747s, miles better service and (at least on AI) more legroom!

I would go UA. While I must admit I've never flown AA, I have flown UA for a number of years SFO-LHR, and have always found the cabin clean, the seat comfortable, the flight crew friendly, and the food good. All and all they're an excellent airline.

Thanks for all your replies folks!

UA do seem to be leading with the most favourable opinions, but I've always fancied flying on one of those big silver AA birds! There's nothing to choose between the aircraft they use (777-200) so I guess my decision may come down to the toss of a coin.

Whilst I have no particular affinity to the aircraft, I would have liked to have flown North West (if they flew this route) for the chance to go on a DC10-30 before they all go out of service.

I would fly UA simply for channel 9. I have also found that the food generally seems to be a little better on UA.

I'd choose AA anyday. Beside the fact that I work for them, More Room Throughout Coach is incredible. Of course I'm a tall guy, so legroom means a lot to me. I like BA, however with their 31" pitch I feel crammed into the seat big time. I also like UAs channel 9, but I'm willing to forgo it for the couple extra inches of leg room.

Why not include BA in the decision-process? There are 3 flights a day and the service is always very good. On the 777 there are so few 4th Class seats that you stand a good chance of getting upgraded during the vacation season!

BA380 - I did fell somewhat guilty about not considering BA in the process, but unfortunately my company only has contract rates with US Airways, UA and AA. I have flown BA long-haul before but not for several years. How does their coach product rate compared with the other airlines I've mentioned?

Does anyone know if VS have any intention of flying back to ORD? I presume this route was dropped from their schedule shortly after the cutbacks of 9/11?

I've flown that route several times with both airlines in the last 3 years and I would chose AA every time simply because you get so much more leg room unless you are guaranteed Economy Plus with United.

On the return leg, definitely go AA because you can get the morning flight which gets into LHR at about 10pm, so you don't get any jet lag the next day - my wife and I always aim for this flight if we can, it makes such a difference.

I love United, but the leg room with AA is so worth it on an 8 hour flight. United should take some of their 747's out of Victorville, give economy passengers 38" leg room and every plane will be full across the pond.

If I am not mistaken, AA has a leg up on UA by the number of frequencies between ORD and LHR
