I need all help I can get from you guys on a day trip out of LAX. The date I have been looking for is April the 7th. (okay with 8-9april too). The main purpose with this day trip is to add new aircrafts and new airlines to my log.
I have been looking to flying to SFO from LAX. Outbound flight with UA, and return with AA. In this way I will add two new airlines and two new aircrafts to my log (733, MD80). The price is $120. Is this a good price? Any other recommendations except of SFO where I could fly to?
And if I book the LAX-SFO-LAX trip through expedia (one itinerary) will UA be able to check me in for the AA flight also at LAX? Or is it better that I take two separate tickets (booking one ways at UA and AA)?
Lots of options !
Look into multiple flights between Greater L.A. (LAX/BUR/LGB/SNA/ONT) and the Bay Area using SFO/SJC/OAK and also SMF (technically outside the Bay Area).
Alternative destinations could be in nearby Nevada (RNO, LAS - maybe via PHX or even TUS).
In general, choose destination airports that also are served by WN, as these airports often have lower fares on all carriers.
What about the next routing:
LAX - SJC AS 4639 0710-0820h E145 (AA Eagle)
SJC - SMF AS 2403 0930-1010h Q400
SMF - BUR WN 0891 1155-1310h B737
BUR - OAK WN 1334 1510-1620h B737
OAK - LAX WN 0742 1700-1815h B737
or if the nonstop is too boring:
OAK - SEA AS 0349 1810-2006h B737-700
SEA - LAX AS 0450 2100-2332h B737-700
_________
First leg also possible as
LAX - SFO UA 0889 0800-0920h B752
SFO - SMF UA 5505 1030-1117h EMB120 Brasilia
then use some later flights on WN SMF (change of terminal by bus necessary, so allow ample time for the UA-WN connection at SMF) - BUR - OAK.
_______________
Flights on AA LAX-SJC easily can be followed by some other routings on WN out of SJC.
Like I said: So many options to choose from, that a second day dedicated to a daytrip would be a wise thing, funds permitting (if possible: Fly now, don't defer to later years !).

First of all, San Francisco is a great city, and I don't think you could go wrong with a day trip there.
For an aviation enthusiast, I would also suggest a day trip to SEA to visit the Museum of Flight. It's a bit pricier ($80 each way instead of $60) than the flights to SFO, but there are multiple airlines flying this route (Virgin America, Alaska, Southwest, United Express) and you could easily get two new airlines. The museum is awesome and easily accessible from the airport, as you can travel cheaply by bus from the airport to the museum with no transfers.

Wow, that is really interesting. Do you know how much it is for that??
Quoting HT (Reply 1): Are you confined to LAX or are nearby airports (BUR, LGB, SNA, ONT) also options ? Think about it.

I trust, you are able to check this out on your own using WN's website and either some broker or the airlines involved' websites for the other flights ...
I was using a german website for the non-WN flights, but these were roughly in the 100€-mark.

Okay, thanks. It is a very interesting routing you have suggested.
Quoting Hywel (Reply 4): If you've never been to Las Vegas, then go there for the day. You might not be old enough to enjoy it properly but you'll still have a great time.
I am sure that LAS is great, but I would rather go to SFO than LAS.

Quoting HT (Reply 7): Are you looking into visiting the city you are flying to or do you want to max out on the flying on the day ? I was assuming the latter ...

Another question for you guys.
When should I book my tickets for the LAX-SFO (UA) and SFO-LAX (AA) sector if I will travel in April? Should I book soon or shall I wait another month to see if the fares will drop?

Fairly unlikely, especially as the dates you are looking into are on the approach of Easter. Grab your seats as soon as you can, as the cheaper fare classes likely will sell out.
And a potential decrease in fare due to falling/fallen cost for fuel, will have only limited effect.

Not to or from LAX, but thought I'd say there are innumerable bargains in the U.S. if you can research random routes. For example, I have found BWI-ORD-SEA-OAK one-way for £80 all-in, SAN-SFO-LAX-PHX for £56 all-in one-way, and so on. So play around with routings from LAX and you'll probably find some great opportunities.
