I know there are many topics about this but I would like to know since I am just the ordinary traveler on BA from SEA to LHR on a 772 how can I get a window seat with this seating policy. This will be my first trip to Europe and was really looking forward to flying on BA but when I found out I couldn't select my seats until online check in opened up it has really been some what of a downer for me. I will also be traveling with my child who is not born right now and when I called they said I would have one of those baby bassinet things but with four of us traveling I would much rather have a window seat instead of having a seat in the middle of the plane or by an exit row. I booked this trip 10 months out if I would have known about this policy before hand I would have payed the little bit of extra money and booked on another airline where I would have been able to select our seats. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

When the infant is born you will need to call BA to add he or she to the reservation. At that point you should request the bassinet.
24 hours before you travel BA open on line check in. When you recall your reservation on their website you will find that BA have allocated you seats. If you are not happy with the seats you can change them.
So far every time I have checked in online so long as I get to the website as soon as check in opens I have been able to get the seats that I wanted.

I assume you're travelling in World Traveller? If so, my experience is that very few people qualify to pick their seats in advance, so when OLCI opens up, as long as you check-in early you'll have plenty of choice.
If you have an infant however, you should be able to select your seats now, and according to this link, you can change it any time you want:
Now in Club World, it's a different story - when I travelled to JFK last year on a non full-fare ticket, with no status, I couldn't get a window seat at OLCI as they'd all been taken by Silvers, Golds and full fare Pax. 63J upstairs on the 747 was good enough for me - I'd have taken that over a downstairs window seat anyway.

Well, it works both ways: People who happen to book their flight late, know that on BA they still have a chance of getting good seats.
But personally, I agree. This "race" when check-in opens is ridiculous. There's no reason why people would not be able to choose seats when they book - especially when internet access is not always available at your destination (when checking in for the flight back home).

The ability to reserve seats in advance reduces the number of people who use OLCI and ba are trying to get as many people as possible to check in on line.

At first I hated the BA seating policy, however I like the window seats on a 744 at the back were the cabin goes down to 2-4-2. With the new policy and OLCI 9 times out of 10 I get a window seat in row 51, 52, 53. Before when you could pre book seats these rows were always blocked and I was never able to get them.

Row 53 is now my favorite row on BAs 747s
I agree with the availability with online check-in. The last flight with BA I took, I didn't check-in until 9 hours before the flight and half the seats were still available. Mind you, this may be a very different case with other routes and might change once more people start using online check-in.
The best thing about online check-in is that you have the seat map right in front of you, so you can get the seat that you really want, or at least a close second
