Airlines Who Will Upgrade Non-company Non-revs?

Hello there,

I myself am a KLM employee, and as a regular non-revver I thought it might be interesting to start this topic for all us non-revvers out there.

I would like to learn from all your experiences out there, in order to make wise choices for
my future travel plans.

I distinguish three different airline policies in this matter:

-Non-revs always in economy no-matter what.
-Upgrade if economy cabins are fully booked
-Voluntary upgrade even if economy is open.

I am offcourse most interested in learning about the policies towards non-company
ISA travellers, but it's also nice to know about the policies for employees.

I'm an F/A for KLM.
Policy for KLM employees is differs for different levels of functions.
Higher management levels will have almost immediately C-class priority.
Pilots will have C-class priority after 7 or 8 years in service.
Cabin crew (pursers only) will have C-class priority after 15 years service.
Every one else gets C-class priority after 20 years in service.
On-board upgrades(by purser) happen once in a while, if you're lucky.

The rule for staff from other airlines is that they will get M-class priority, but will get upgraded
to C if circumstances so dictate.
Onboard upgrades (by purser) are very rare.

I've just got back from a little RTW trip flying AMS-KUL-SYD-BNE-ASP-ADL-MEL-LAX-AMS
using KL,MH and QF.
Unfortunately I've spent the entire time in economy-class, but the most important thing off-course is that I got a seat on every single flight.

When I checked in at KUL for the SYD flight the MH check-in agent apologised that business was full and that he'd have to put me in coach.
So I guess MH do upgrade from time to time.

For QF it's easy: economy class only. Even if economy is full, but there are heaps of seats
in C and F they will leave you behind.

So here are my experiences, I'm very curious about yours

I have been upgraded on LH/AY/MH/BA/UA/JL (on long haul) - most of these flights were more than 4 years ago and the policies has since changed. On short-haul (European) flights I have been upgraded at least on LH/SK/AY/LX/BT. (I work for LH by the way)

Upgrades on BA and UA (BA twice UA once - all USA-Europe flights) were because I happen to know a right person  Wink

Talking about MH... I was given a C-class seat on almost empty KUL-AKL flight in 2004. At the gate I changed it for a 5 seats on middle row in economy - I have never slept so good on any flight since... and was still served a C-class breakfast (I missed the dinner as I was sleeping) Big grin

These days I anyway buy a business class tickets on long-haul if agreements allows this.

I work for Alaska Airlines and we can upgrade to First Class at the time of listing for a flight. We will only be cleared for First at the gate, but if there is a seat, we are welcome to it. It is a nice perk when you get it, as it is quite hard to get First Class on AS.

I have worked for NWA in the past, and got the same upgrade benefits, which really helped on the long haul flights. I used to be upgraded atleast 75% of the time.

I know for a fact that Alaska won't upgrade non company non-revs unless they have a pass that is upgradeable. Now having said that, there have been certain instances where non-company employees have been upgraded. I guess it all depends on the gate agent you get.

I have been upgraded pretty much everytime on UA as a non-rev. Even though I always have only a Y-pass, they always look and find ways to upgrade me. Pretty much the only reason why I choose to non-rev on UA.

I have been upgraded on KL as well. They don't usually upgrade non-company staff, and will only do so if the economy class cabin is full. This was the case when I was upgraded.

BKI-KUL I ended up in Y,
KUL-AMS the checkin staff blocked 4 middle seats for me in Y, allowing me to sleep.

I know JL is not voluntary upgrading anymore to staff for private travel.


I use KL mostly though (I'm not KL staff), and have been upgraded a few times at the gate, or got the seat next to me blocked off. Once I received a cabin-upgrade by the purser too.

Regarding LH, till now they never put me in front. I usually get a seat immediately behind the seperation curtain in Y, usually the more quiet rows since it seems that these are blocked by LH for staff/nonrev/deadheading crew ?

It seems to be the common practice with MH...

When travelling as a family (when my dad was BA staff) we were upgraded to C-Class on a PEN-KUL flight on A330, which was very pleasant.

Another example of being upgraded was travelling AA domestic service ORD-DEN a few years back when we made it in to F-class despite the flight being massively oversold. Still can't understand the decision to leave about 100 fare-paying passengers at the gate to let a group of 4 travelling on BA staff tickets on the plane instead. We were at the other end of the terminal checking the availability of an American Eagle flight to Colorado Springs just in case.

I work for Monarch but haven't flown non-rev as yet, but hope to do so in the near future. Obvioulsy there is only one class on scheduled services, but I hope that the extra legroom seats would be made available to staff travelling.

It will be intersting to see.

NW seems to be pretty liberal despite company policy a lot of agents will upgrade them, I know my friend that works for ASA has recieved C class several times to AMS and other places.

I don't think this can be answered.
It is all about luck or being in the right place at the right time.

I have flown several times on LH with no upgrade and yet my friend did get one.
Same thing with JL and AF. No upgrade for me but when my friend flew them, he was upgraded.
I wear a suit and tie everytime I nonrev.

Airlines that have upgraded me on international flights:

AA (LGW-DFW)
SN (BOS-BRU)
BA (JFK-LHR) (PHL-LHR)
NW (BOS-AMS) (AMS-EWR)
GF (LHR-BAH) (BEY-BAH)
VS (SFO-LHR)

Maybe offically, however from my experience I have been upgraded quite often on LH, (5 out of 7 times) though the 2 times have been with room up front available.

as for other airlines:

UA every time I have flown with them
CX 0/2, even got the very very back of the 77W (not good)
AA 0/1 F was full so no upgrade
JL 1/1, well C at least, it was nice!
TG 1/2
Croatian (got upgdaded but sat in the cockpit instead!)
AF 1/1
BA 1/1
AZ 0/1
QF 0/4
Aloha did not have a C or F (in the 732 at least)
DL 1/3

Though I myself have never experienced the 'up grade', but I am hoping to talk an LX employee into it on my way to DXB.

We tried the KL staff at the connections desk on our way to NRT, he was very friendly about it, and he did check... or maybe he just pressed a few buttons!

Asking groundstaff for an upgrade will, in my experience, decrease your chances for an
upgrade.
Being as nice as you can be be, and dressing well will increase your chances.
