Recently while i was looking into booking flights for my round the world trip ( economy obviously ) i noticed that *A had increased their fares by approx $1300 AUD. WOW that is excessive to say the least
To be entirely honest i prefer *A mainly due to their more or less direct flights at destinations wich i'd like to visit . SYD - PVG - PEK - SFO - SEA - LAX - MSY - SXM - JFK - CAI - ATH.
When i thought about it let me see what OneWorld offer. And to my amazement they were $1,500 AUD cheaper than *A !!! . For the mileage wich is approx 37,000 on both alliances One World are approx. $5,200 AUD inclusive of taxes ( not including the 10% discount they are offering - i am travelling outside the dates of the discounted fare ) , while *A is approx $5,799 NOT including taxes
Although OneWorld are cheaper they do not offer flights to were i need to go on certain days and i flew OneWorld a few years back and was not impressed !!!! .
So do i stick with OneWorld and cop it sweet ? or do i fork out the extra $1,500 AUD and fly *A? Just curious as to what evry1 thinks. Thanx in advance !!!!!

Well being an OW slave myself the answer is easy ...but I sure understand if it seems OW offers limited choices for you, comparing to *A. The cool thing with OW is that you can plan and book your RTW trip online:

Not really, I use AA and other oneworld carriers to many destinations that the *A doesn't even operate too. At SCL it appears that the only *A carriers will soon be AC and TAM (soon to join *A). LX is leaving SCL. Also, MIA is my hub, and both AA and LAN fly to many of the same destinations, so I have a choice between the two of them. MIA also has daily flights operated by IB and BA. AA also has daily B772s service to LAX from MIA, which offers connections onwards to QF and CX flights. AA also recently upgraded MIA-MAD to a B772 and Barajas offers many connections that are not available at LHR. I could easily fly MIA-LHR-HKG-SYD-AKL-SCL-EZE-MIA all on oneworld.

I think it may be best to stick with *A . I need as many direct flights back home ( Greece ) as possible , LX , LH , MS , SQ , TG , all go direct home for me and also offer daily flights from SYD and within Europe. Mum and Dad moved back to Greece when Dad retired a few years back so i'm in Greece around 4 to 5 times a year and just find it better with the airlines that i mentioned, but on the other hand OneWorld is cheaper.

Not really
Yes really. Here's a comparison. The information is from each alliance's website:
Star..................912 cities served in 159 countries
Oneworld..........675 cities served in 130 countries
That's a BIG difference.
Here's how SkyTeam stacks up:
SkyTeam.........905 cities served in 169 countries.
I fly into POS, BGI, GYE, SCL, UIO, EZE, IQQ, ANF, MVD, MAD, and LHR mostly and MIA is my base. Unfortunately, the *Alliance doesn't operate into many of these destinations at a high frequency, as compared to oneworld.

I have to say that AA has a great F product on the 772. The flagships suites are very comfortable and the menus have changed for the better. AA is also upgrading a sub-fleet of B752s for TATL flights. I recently flew on the prototype and did a TR. I also did a mini TR on LAN Chile.

That's mostly just the latin world. And with LAN, IB and AA all strong in latin america is it any wonder, especially since you live in the North American gateway to Latin America which just happens to be onewold.
If you want to make it really interesting, lets say you need to go to places in the North of Sweden or Norway, then to a regional city in Poland, then to Frankfurt, then to Tel Aviv, then down into deep Africa, say Harare, then from there you need to go to Phuket, then to Singapore, then to Kula Lumpur, then to Japan and then to PEK before back to the USA.
Star should be able to get you most of the way non-stop or 1 short stop. Oneworld has a few holes in that network. The lack of a real hub for oneworld in the centre of europe alone is a major drawback. FRA just happens to connect everything too well for a start, both long haul and short haul.

That's true, however the flight from MIA to MAD often takes less than 7 hours, and at MAD I can connect onwards to ORY and LIN. If I need to go to FRA from MIA, I use AA to MAD and then connect onto LAN Chile's A-340 service to FRA. However, the construction at FRA makes the airport seem a bit drab. I am actually going to TXL on Thursday with AA to LHR, then connecting onwards with BA to Tegel.

You should also consider where to you can redeem miles in a sensible way from your place of living... That RTW trip should give you a sh*tload of frequent flyer miles on either *A or 1W.
WARNING! The post above should be taken with a grain of salt! Furthermore, it may be slightly biased towards A.

Of course its horses for courses here. If you happen to live in DFW, LHR, or even Hong Kong, Oneworld is probably going to make more sense for you most of the time regardless of cost, purely in terms of options. So i guess its really gonna depend on where you want/like/need to visit and maybe carrier preference. Anybody who likes to use, for example SIA really should stick with star.
Just as an aside, there are some bucketshops selling non star/oneworld rtw tickets that allow the use of a collection of airlines across alliances... some strange ones that let you use a group of airlines, like Emirates, KLM, Aerolinneas and then SAA or Air New Zealand. They may well be worth a look.

here is an example of one i found.
the following carrriers can be used:
Malaysia Airlines - Kenya Airways - KLM Royal Dutch Airlines - Northwest Airlines - South African Airways - Jet Airways (India) - Alaska Airlines - Copa Airlines - Continental Airlines - Air Pacific - Malev Hungarian - Air Vanuatu - Polynesia Airlines - Air Caladonie - Air Tahiti Nui - Sri Lankan Airlines - Air Europa.
Completely wacky I know, but depending on where you want to go it may help.

Shouldn't be a problem. NZ MEL-AKL then I'm fairly certain NZ codeshare with AR AKL-EZE.

Exactly, if I lived in Atlanta, I would probably be a Delta FF. However, AA is the only carrier to serve Latin America and the Caribbean with multiple daily Non-stop flights. And they have a pretty good domestic network as well. As for the *A here in MIA, it's very weak. UA pulled out of FLL, and will operate a skeleton schedule at MIA this summer. US Airways flies to their respective hubs only. The *A has a very weak international presence here as well; except for AC, LH, and LX.

LAN Argentina also code-shares with QANTAS on the thrice weekly SYD-EZE Non-stop service.

I believe it works both ways - Star has a weakness in Latin and South America that AA and LA cover well and UA doesn't, though that soon will change a bit with JJ joining soon. Oneworld has a weakness in Africa with no home carrier for the continent at the moment, while Star has SAA and Egyptair (though they are at either extremes of the continent - ET is however looking to join Star).
Jist of what I'm saying - certain regions are covered better by Star, others by Oneworld. You'll always find counter examples for I could do this itinerary easier with this alliance versus that itinerary with that alliance.
It is really interesting what amongst the three major alliances, Skyteam has the most net countries served, though Star has net cities but not be very much!
