Ok, I have a choice between AC or CO in Y class from HKG to the East Coast for my yearly sojourn back home. All things being equal ($$$) which should I go for? Does AC offer free liquor in Y class, CO charges. Not all CO 777s are refitted with new AVOD, correct? Any comments or info would help!
AC offers free liquor in Y on international flights. So your HKG-YVR/YYZ flight will have free liquor. The YVR/YYZ-East Coast flight will not. All of AC's fleet have AVOD save for some 333s and 2 763s.

All but two CO 777-200ERs are fitted with AVOD, the remaining two should get the AVOD installed by May.

Go Air Canada, their 777's have some of the widest economy seats in the industry at 18.5 inches and I can confirm they are extremely comfortable. Also legroom is 33-34 inches...
I also think their AVOD system is excellent, I just wish they could sort out the inflight map, as this continues to not be available.
I personally think Air Canada is one of the best airlines in North America and transferring through their very new terminal at Toronto is a breeze!

If CO doesnt, then go with AC. You need a bit of these on a long flight!!!
CO charges $5 for alcoholic drinks in Y class. Drinks are free on AC flights to/from Europe, Asia, Australia, South America. Food and beverages on all other routes are "buy-on-board".
CO doesn't join Star Alliance until late this year. Following from CO website:
[i]Continental anticipates joining Star Alliance during the fourth quarter of 2009. Continental intends to end its participation in the SkyTeam Alliance after the last scheduled flight on Oct. 24, 2009.[/]

I agree its very good and has a decent selection of TV, movies and radio. Besides the map not working which never worked on my YYZ-SFO flight a month ago, the touch screen is finicky and make sure you can see the arrow or you might accidentally stop your movie, it happened to me .
Also AC has power outlets or USB ports right next to the PTV so if you have laptop or Ipod you can keep it charged on the flight. (note that was the A320, but I would assume the 777 would have it as well)

AC is way better than CO, I love their aircrafts, the airports in Canada are so wonderful as well!
Way to go AC!

I really doubt that the USB port's 5V/0.5A would help to charge a laptop. For laptops there is a better solution - each section of 3 seats has two 110 V power outlets.

I've seen the USB port in every XM aircraft I flew; E70/E90, 319/320/321, 77W.

No of course not but it can charge and I-pod or cell phone, its especially useful if you have an Ipod touch and you have better videos than AC has

All but one of them, ship #12, which (go figure!) I flew on yesterday, LHR-IAH. Still a very comfortable seat, though, far better than KLM's coach seats. Not that KLM is in this equation, but just for comparison.

Continental also has very wide seats in their 777's, 17.9. If you really need that extra half inch.....

...which could explain why he pointed out that there are POWER OUTLETS. Funny what happens when we read...
Anyhow, I really enjoy flying Continental. That said, what's your AC equipment type on the route? If it's a 777-3ER or -2LR, I might be tempted to try it out... I've been on an AC 777-3ER, and it was a great looking bird in coach. Ever better in business, tile floors... we stayed on the ground, though.

If they work. I flew AC 772 from YVR-SYD and return in November, and less than 50% of the AVOD was operational. A few movie channels, and 2 TV channels were operational.

All seats have USB ports, but the 110V ports are 2 per triple seat (aisle & middle seats).
That said, the seats were very comfortable, with plenty of leg room.
