NYC-SFO - Your Thoughts On My Options

So I'm about to book a ticket NYC-SFO and can't decide what I want to do. Like many others I thought I'd gather the opinions of some a.nutters. My choices:

Non-stop on Virgin America (A-319)
Non-stop on AA (767-200)
Non-stop on UA (757 ps)
Non-stop on DL (737-800)

One or more stops on a bunch of carriers (including the opportunity to do some domestic 777 or 767-300 flying).

I am a US Dividend Preferred member so I generally try to keep to *A. I have a full day to get there and another full day to return to the number of flights, etc does not matter (in fact I sometimes plan extra connections to vary aircraft types when time is a non-issue).

My biggest thing when flying coast to coast is having the space to get some work done (with my favorite being high chances of empty seat next to me).

So what's the collective wisdom here?

I want to live in an old and converted 727...

If it's not, I'd probably just go with UA because of Economy Plus. That is, if you value the extra room like you said.

If it's in F, I'd go with AA or DL.

Since this is business travel I am required, by policy, to fly in Y. And the majority of carriers have flights within a few dollars of each other ($269-304 return all in).

I'm leaning toward the UA for the Star benefits and the E+, but the curious in me says fly VX (plus if what I've been reading about load factors is spot on I should have a decent chance of an empty middle seat - esp since I am flying outbound on a Tuesday).

Other thoughts or opinions?

I'd go with UA. You're guaranteed extra room regardless of the loads. Plus you'll stick within Star Alliance. Even times when I book an "empty" flight and pick a seat in an empty row, I inevitably end up next to somebody anyhow.

Yup I would have to say UA, more legroom and u also get an electrical plug for your computer.

I concur. I was very pleased with my experience on VX. Don't forget that you can get exit or bulkhead rows with extra legroom for a few more bucks.

The difference right now for main cabin select is $365 e/w + taxes - compare that to $269 r/t all in and that's quite a difference.

I'll give you that food is also included - but hardly worth the difference. I can get about the same amount of space on UA for no premium in fare, and I don't care about the IFE since I will be using the time to 1) do work or 2) continue writing my dissertation (how exciting, right).

F9 is an option with a connection at DEN, with a LGA being your exit point. B6 also has a non-stop with the EML seats costing $30 extra. Just a couple more options if you haven't booked yet. Let us know how you decided, a trip report would be a bonus!

DL All the way! I would try it, the 738's are very comfortable and have PTV's as previously stated.

UA PS! Since you are Star elite, for 15,000 miles you can upgrade to Business from pretty much any Economy fare bracket (same amount of miles regardless). Have a friend who's going on leave next week, she got round trip for her friend JFK-LAX-JFK for $269 then used miles to upgrade to Business. Row 10 in PS J also has two FULL exit rows (over wing) worth of legroom on the B757. I also personally like the UA PS J service...I find it quite cozy. I haven't flown it in about 6 months though.

Recently flew JFK-LAS r/t on Virgin America and they where great ! To upgrade to their Main Cabin Select is actually $100 ow if you do it at the gate if is still available. They have a great product, I was very impressed.
