I have a 10 day break in October, and an invite to go down to Rio. I'm also going to try and see friends and family in Texas on the same trip. I can use Varig for 2/3 of the trip, or avoid them completely. Any ideas. If I go with Varig, I'd fly Madrid-Frankfurt-GIG (JK/RG) GIG-GRU-LAX-DFW (RG/RG/UA) and then DFW-Frankfurt-Madrid (LH/LH). If not, I'd go Madrid-Frankfurt-GIG (JK/LH) GIG-ORD-DFW (UA/UA) and DFW-Frankfurt-Madrid (LH/LH). I personally am a huge fan of the MD-11, which is why I'm tempted to go with Varig. Anyone have any praise/poison in regards to their longhaul economy service. Any feedback is welcome. (And yes, I must go with Star airlines. I already have 10,000 miles with them for the year, and this would get me a silver card. It'd be silly to go any other way.)

Thanks for the feedback. Indeed, this would be the ultimate MD-11 trip. (3 legs - AB) (FRA / FRF / EDDF), Germany">FRA-GIG, GIG-GRU, and GRU-LAX.) Hopefully I will get a few more responses so I have some idea of what I'm in for...

Two weeks ago I flew on a Varig 777 from AMS to CDG. The plane was continuing on to Sao Paulo. The seats and windows were dirty, and the pitch was very tight. I'm glad I wasn't going all the way to Sao Paulo. The safety demonstration was on the individual PTVs, but it was inaudible. They ran it two or three times, and still it was impossible to hear. So they just dispensed with the safety demo. No headsets were in the seat pockets, so passengers couldn't enjoy the PTV during the flight. Even though the plane wasn't crowded, they put most of the passengers together, instead of spreading us around so we would have more room. The forward economy cabin was practically empty. One good thing about the flight. They served a very tasty sandwich.

I have flown Varig on 737, 767 and DC-10. The latter being the closest I can
get to an MD11. I've flown them on both domestic and international flights. However, my last RG flight was in 1994 in the "good old days" of RG glory. Their service was superb in economy and business. I'm not sure how it is today but if it is similar to what it used to be, DEFINITELY fly Varig!

Hey...I'm in Rio right now and we flew down on a RG MD11 and it was fine. The inflight entertainment could have been better but all in all, I enjoyed the flight. The aircraft I was on was a former SwissAir A/C and it had the crew rest compartment in the back and the F/A (Marisa) let me take a look when i told her i was cabin crew for another airline. This aircraft was in very good condition and the seats were comfortable. The seat pitch was fine but then i am only 5'8.
