LH is still one of the few airlines that are *relatively* generous with upgrades. However, if you don't have LH status it will be tough. I had a few times that check-in staff were very friendly and wanted to give me an upgrade (even without me asking for one), but then they showed me the long list of LH Hons who all were in front of me (I have UA Gold).... And, as OHLHD mentioned, with a small child, I'd see it as a miracle if you got an upgrade.

Quoting OHLHD (Reply 2): If you go with a 3 year old then your chances are zero. Kids usually don´t get upgraded.
Exactly, European carriers in general are also far more choosy about who they give their upgrades too.
They will upgrade people with status only if they need to.
Many people say 'it doesn't hurt to ask'. But in my experience, those who ask are the least likely to get an upgrade. Its to do with getting something for nothing which doesn't quite sit right with me!
