SW733 you bet they do! UAL still is running at least two flights daily ORD-SFO and back using 747-400s. Also LAX-ORD and back has 1 flight daily with a 747-400. Just did a random date search through listing, there may be certain days they don't run them although.
2 vacations ago, on my way to Boston, after my HNL-LAX, leg I waited 6+ hours just to non rev on the LAX-ORD flight with 747 service. It was worth it, the captain was retiring, with his family onboard and upstairs in business (first time I asked for Business upstairs and not first as I knew they were all seated upstairs I wanted to join the party! ) they all treated everyone to bubbly champagne (upstairs), gave every passenger a few Peppermint Patties, and the normal retiring festivities that come with it.
You may think I'm crazy but, these flights with the 744s are SO wide open anyone non-rev with even the lowest seniority will get in Business class for sure, or if they are lucky F/C.When traveling to the east coast I usually will scan for these flights and go out of my way to get on these 747s or 777s on these short 3-4 hour flights as it's definitely worth it. My guess is they use these aircraft mainly for positioning and probably rotate them around the hubs. I would definitely consider it Savedelta if you're not looking to go international. You may hate or love UAL/their service, but I believe they are one of the few, if the only? (unsure) US domestic carrier with 744s on short domestic hops. Have fun...

Thanks for the input Lorm! I have been scouting the ATL-ORD-LAX-ORD-ATL routes. Seems they do the 744 on the 2pm flight LAX-ORD. Only problem...nothing with UA other than about 10k miles Maybe I will pay the fare...
