Hi, all.

Just something that came to mind.

I know there have been many, many threads on which airline is the largest. However, this can be defined in many ways (just like which airport is busiest, for example).

So, my question addresses several of these characterization methods.

Which airlines it the biggest in terms of:

1) Fleet size?

2) Destinations Served?

3) Passengers carried?

4) Miles Flown?

5) Countries Served?

6) Total Profit?

And, if there's any other "fun facts" people are aware of, or want to throw in as a further definition of an airline's "size" please feel free! I'm always here to learn more!

1) Fleet size?

Delta, I think, followed by AA.

3) Passengers carried?

Southwest, I think

The answer to all of your questions is the New Delta.

That was formerly true in the Domestic US market only. The OP is stated to live in Switzerland, so I suspect he meant total passengers. In either case, the combined DL-NW carries more passengers than WN, I'm sure.

I am living in the states, but am Swiss, hence the flag. I did mean all passengers, although the biggest carrier in the US Domestic market would be an equally interesting question to get the answer to.

Is the new Delta really the answer to EVERY single one of those questions??

No, if you ignore the merged DL/NW, in 2008 AA carried about 4 million more passengers than WN. According to their own annual traffic data:

AA - 92,770,940
WN - 88,529,234

In terms of International passengers carried, I believe Ryanair is the worlds largest.

Delta is most certainly not the world's most profitable airline. Don't know who is, but it sure isn't Delta.

I wouldn't be shocked if Delta also didn't serve the most countries - could well be a European airline, due to the number of countries over there - Europe is roughly the size of the United States, yet there are 40-some odd countries in Europe, while it's just one in the US. Add in the fact that there are countries in Asia and North Africa that are still considered short-to-medium haul from Western Europe, and it adds up quickly.
