Am about to book MAN-IAH via AMS on KL. The fare is fantastic and I wondered if any particular seats in Y were better. I know there are no PTV's but which seats if any have a good view of the overhead screens and do any have powerpoints for laptops.

I would recommend against the seats just left of the mid cabin galley. I sat there LAX-AMS, which was a very long flight, in 29A, and it wasn't very nice. The galley noise was... surprising.
As far as viewing screens, you could take a bulkhead!

If you don't mind not having a window, I recommend seat 11-17 D/E. It's a smaller sub-cabin and much quieter than in the back. I usually sat there when KL still flew the 744 to PBM. If you are travelling with one other person, these seats are even better, as there is a gap between the seat and the galley wall, excellent for stretching out or storing some stuff. The last time I flew the 744 i was in seat 14C and had a good view of the monitor.

This is one of my least favourite a/c to fly. I'd go along with the preference for the front Y cabin (seats 11-17 I think), but even here the seats are as bottom-numbing as elsewhere. Frankly there is rarely anything worth watching on the overhead IFE and quite often the picture is so blurred or discoloured as to be uncomfortable. These birds are long overdue for refit or replacement.

Seats 21-26 (ABC) have good views of the overhead screens, I sat in 23B there was a great view of the TV and we were some of the first off the plane. I'm not sure if KLM has started to install the PTV's on the 744's, I heard -BFG is first.
The KL 744's are great, even without PTV's, the in seat radio is really good. I have flown MAN-AMS-IAH as well.
