PrivatAir Biz Class Not So Nice?

I was looking at this picture and it struck me that these biz class seats are not nearly as nice as the recent additions in biz class as many of the other long haul airlines.

Agree? Disagree? Anyone flown PrivatAir that can comment?

You're right, but you're missing the point. Privatair's purpose is not to offer a super-duper premium service, it's to offer flights where premium demand exists but not coach-class demand for an airline to use one of its own wide-bodies. Privatair's customers do not choose between that service and a more comfortable carrier, they choose between a better-timed and/or non-stop service vs using another carrier with a connection or a less (not) convenient schedule.

Case in point, last time I used Privatair, it was to make a late afternoon meeting in IAH and be in BRU the next day, via Privatair's IAH-AMS service for KL. Couldn't be done any other way, and I didn't care much whether the seat or food would have been better on another carrier.

have a look at Lufthansa/KLM/Swiss/Privatair. the past years those kind of flights where almost only available from Europe (FRA/DUS/ZRH/AMS) to the U.S. (NYC/ORD/IAH). now they also have services to India (PNQ), Middle East (DXB/KWI/DMM) and soon to start to the CIS (MUC-TAS).
also BA starts now with an A318 from LCY to JFK, it's niche market with only business demand.

on a side note regarding the seats and the interior of the aircraft. Privatair is only operating on behalf of LH, LX or KL. eventhough their aircrafts are dedicated on above mentioned routes during a short or longer period (it depends how the route is performing) they're still able to lease out their aircrafts on other charter flights. therefore it's better to have a simple, but yet very satisfying seat and business layout.

Privatair has been going for a while, before EOS, MAXJET and Silverjet started, and are still going now, after they have gone.

But those latter folks operated old widebodies and went head-to-head in the largest markets (like JFK-LHR) with entrenched carriers with extensive schedules and frequencies. They therefore had to offer very low prices (in comparison) which likely required very high load-factors per flight to make the service economically viable.

PrivatAir, on the other hand, uses narrowbodies and charge higher fares and seem to augment established carrier's services rather then compete with them.

Also, you have the majors themselves starting these types of services with NH's 737-700ER services in Asia and BA's upcoming LCY-JFK services with the A318CJ.

With the not insignificant difference that Privatair provides this service on behalf of entrenched, legacy carriers that do not have the equipment (or will) to do it in house, whereas the EOS, Maxjet, etc... were taking those entrenched carriers head on.

The biggest issue with EOS, Maxjet and Sliverjet was that they didn't have a FFP, they didn't have a feed and they operated from LTN and STN in the UK, which are not as desirable as LHR - especially if you are flying in on another airline to make a self connection.

Yes, seats are (were) of older style, nowhere near lie-flat and IIRC manually operated.
Also, there was no fixed installed IFE to speak of (only some overhead monitors), but (for me: useless) digiplayers were handed out - devices that were unable to power the noise-cancelling function in the KL-headphones provided ...

From what I understand, the BBJ/BBJ2 are weight restricted especially for such long sectors (AMS-IAH is 5012 mi) and keeping seats light-weight helps a lot.

Service, however, was above KL's standard as cabin crew was coming from PrivatAir meaning they have gone through a very good training to provide service.
Food & drinks were standard KL-Business Class in line with the then current theme "Brazil".
